Job SummaryThe University Information Technology Services (UITS) department of the University of Massachusetts is seeking a Digital Experience Intern who wants to become part of a dynamic team of technology professionals supporting the institution's mission, “To enable UMASS to provide an affordable and accessible education of high quality and to conduct programs of research and public service that advance knowledge and improve the lives of the people of the Commonwealth, the nation and the world.”
The Digital Experience team at the UMass President’s Office seeks a current UMass student to work as a digital accessibility intern supporting the university’s digital accessibility efforts. They will receive full access to a digital accessibility training suite, gain an understanding of assistive technology used by the disability community, and help with digital accessibility activities across the President’s Office. The internship is fully remote with working sessions via Zoom.
Functions
- Run weekly digital accessibility reports for public-facing websites and identify issues.
- Complete digital accessibility and assistive technology training.
- Assist with manual testing of third-party products using common assistive technologies (screen readers, display modes, text-to-speech, zoom, magnification, speech recognition).
- Provide guidance to content editors on how to remediate inaccessible content.
- Help remediate public-facing content where needed.
- Current UMass student enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program.
- GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Curious, motivated, and willing to learn new technologies and skills.
- Basic knowledge of HTML/CSS.
- Knowledge of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 A and AA requirements.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion when interacting with staff.
- Experience with version control systems such as Git Hub.
- Experience with content management systems such as Drupal.
- Any internship offers within the President's Office require the candidate to consent to and complete a background review.
