OverviewOak Ridge National Laboratory has multiple openings for an Environmental Data Science Engineer in Oak Ridge, TN, to apply advanced data science methods, tools, and techniques to the design, development, and implementation of data-driven solutions to help link advanced informatics and computer science to data management and distribution in Earth and Environmental sciences in support of DOE's science, energy, and national security missions.
Responsibilities- Apply advanced data science methods, tools, and techniques to design, develop, and implement data-driven solutions for Earth and environmental sciences.
- Develop scientific data management tools to manage a large volume of sensor and other sources.
- Work with frameworks such as D3.js, Express
JS, Node.js, Java 7/8, Spring Boot, Web services, and Python. - Develop geospatial web tools for advanced visualization and real-time data analysis.
- Work in a DEV/OPS research environment and use source control (Git or similar).
- Apply big data technologies such as Cassandra, Spark, Graph
QL, or others to analyze large and diverse environmental data.
- Master's Degree in Computer Science, Information Science, or related field.
- 1.5 years of full-time post‑degree experience developing scientific data management tools.
- Proven background in real-world computer programming applied to ecological and environmental science applications.
- Familiarity with High‑Performance Computing (HPC).
- Demonstrated knowledge of databases such as Postgre
SQL or MySQL. - Proficiency in programming languages such as Java and Python.
- Good communication skills in English (both oral and written).
- Desire to learn and adopt new tools and technologies as required by projects.
- Willingness to travel 3–4 times per year to national conferences.
- Occasional remote work within commuting distance is permitted.
