Data Scientist, Data Science Manager, Data Engineer, Data Analyst
Sandia National Laboratories is seeking a highly motivated Intern to join our Integrated Security Environment (ISE) Data Science team. This internship offers a unique opportunity to apply data science techniques to support national security and advanced technology projects. The intern will work alongside experienced data scientists and engineers to analyze complex datasets, develop predictive models, and contribute to innovative solutions in a secure and collaborative environment.

- Assist in collecting, cleaning, and preprocessing large and complex datasets relevant to ISE projects.
- Develop and implement data analysis and machine learning models to extract insights and support decision‑making.
- Visualize data and model results to communicate findings effectively to technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate data science solutions into broader project goals.
- Document methodologies, results, and code to ensure reproducibility and knowledge sharing.
- Follow Sandia's security, safety, and quality protocols throughout all activities.
- Utilize and manipulate Excel spreadsheets for input into the Data Monitoring System (DMS) to compile and generate technical reports, statistics, timelines, tables, and graphics.
- Support the DMS Team with configuration, documentation, and metagroup control.
Salary Range:
Sandia interns earn competitive pay rates based on credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package.
- Earned bachelor’s degree.
- Currently attending and enrolled full‑time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0.
- Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer.
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance requiring U.S. citizenship.
- Ability to learn quickly and handle multiple work assignments.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Strong desire to perform national security development work with a production focus.
- Strong foundation in statistics, machine learning, and data analysis.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or similar.
- Experience with big data tools and platforms (e.g., Data Monitoring System) is a plus.
- Familiarity with cybersecurity or security‑related data is beneficial.
- Prior internship or project experience involving real‑world data science applications.
- Experience with data manipulation libraries (e.g., pandas, Num Py) and machine learning frameworks (e.g., scikit‑learn, Tensor Flow).
Organization 2257 manages the Integrated Stockpile Evaluation (ISE) as a program driven to understand all aspects of stockpile systems to ensure that the nuclear weapon stockpile is known, with increasing certainty to be safe, secure, reliable, and effective both now and into the future. ISE integrates a variety of stockpile evaluation programs and focuses on contributing to the transformation of U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile and complex.
SecurityClearance
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre‑employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q‑level security clearance, requiring U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (e.g., U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on‑site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
