Senior Systems Administrator — Remote

This is a great opportunity for a skilled, highly motivated Systems Administrator to come in on the ground floor. We are a small team, so you'll have the opportunity to contribute to all aspects of IT operations, from cybersecurity and networking to server and application configuration.

You may contribute to infrastructure on bare-metal servers, or provisioned via cloud service providers like Amazon Web Services, or Azure. You may support both internal corporate assets as well as infrastructure established for external clients. This isn't necessarily a customer-facing role, but a portion of our infrastructure is dedicated to customers.

PLEASE NOTE: Currently this is a remote position with occasional in-person meetings. However, preference will be given to candidates in the vicinity of Bethesda, MD, as a hybrid work arrangement may be established in the future.

What you'll do
  • Work with the team to design, configure, and maintain a virtual private cloud in a CMMC compliant way:
  • Develop scripts and components to streamline and automate our cloud management activities
  • Configure audit and logging with tools like AWS Cloud Trail and Cloud Watch
  • Provision, configure, and maintain virtual machines supporting web applications, and other components
  • Support administration and maintenance of external customer systems. For example, you may:
  • Develop Ansible and other scripts to automate installation, deployment, and maintenance tasks
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with firewalls, SELinux, or fapolicyd
  • Configure, maintain, and monitor virtual machines (VMs). For example, you may:
  • Run and track security compliance scans and remediate issues
  • Monitor system backup activity, usage, and resources
  • Configure a VM created from a baseline image to serve as a file share, Kerberos KDC, or DNS server
  • Plan, install, configure and maintain core enterprise-level applications. For example, you may be responsible for:
  • Apache Http and Tomcat instances
  • Git Lab, Artifactory, and Jenkins deployments
  • Elasticsearch and Kibana instances
  • DNS, NFS, and Kerberos servers
  • Support the expansion of our main corporate infrastructure and Cybersecurity practices. For example, you may research, design, and implement:
  • System monitoring and backup capabilities
  • Establish and document corporate IT policies and repeatable procedures to ensure our systems comply with security requirements
  • Plan, coordinate, and document Configuration Control Board activities, Tabletop Exercises, and/or impact analyses as our organizational systems change
  • Support external audit activities through organization, evidence collection, and interview support.
What you'll get out of it
  • A deeper understanding of Cybersecurity and DoD standards such as NIST SP 800-171 and Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC)
  • Experience in a wide variety of Systems Administration tasks typically done, in larger organizations, by different specialists
  • The opportunity to participate in all aspects of the development of a enterprise capability, from research to delivery and maintenance
  • The chance to take ownership of infrastructure development projects, and implement your own ideas about IT operations automation
What you'll need

In general, you should:

  • Have experience with cloud infrastructure and expertise in Linux
  • Have a background configuring and maintaining networks and systems to comply with security requirements like CMMC
  • Want to participate in all aspects of IT operations from networking to core service configuration and support
  • Have a desire to learn new skills and tools as IT operations and Cybersecurity continue to evolve
  • Be a self-starter who actively looks for ways to improve our…
