Position Summary

Reporting directly to the University Chief Information Officer (CIO), the Deputy Chief Information Officer Academic and Administrative Technologies serves as a deputy for the CIO with strategic leadership and overall operational oversight and accountability for all IT services provided by WashU IT to the academic and administrative business units in the seven schools and Continuing and Professional Studies (CAPS) on the Danforth Campus, and the central fiscal unit (CFU) of the university.

The position has key relationships, engagement, and a strategic understanding with university executive leadership, in particular the deans and business managers for:
The School of Arts and Sciences;
The Brown School;
The McKelvey School of Engineering;
The Olin Business School;
The Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts;
The School of Law;
The School of Public Health; and Continuing and Professional Studies.

The position also works closely with the Deputy CIO for Research, Clinical and Medical Education Technologies, the Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff, and the Chief Technology Officer to define and execute strategic directions, operational priorities, and execution across the entire university.

Duties & Responsibilities

Strategy & Planning

  • Lead IT and digital transformation programs through engagement with the university strategic plan and ensure the organization has the skills, resources, and practices needed to attain and sustain its goals.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to oversee change impacts of technology products and services for academic and administrative enterprise technologies.
  • Champion holistic talent management, equity, diversity, and inclusion programs, and nurture individuals and teams with professional development opportunities.
  • With a primary focus on the academic and administrative business units, develop, communicate, and promote overall WashU IT business/technology plans to leadership, staff, partners, customers, and stakeholders.
  • Develop quality solutions aligned to business priorities through partnership, influence, and governance structures.
  • Collaborate with university leadership, schools, departments, and other units to develop a strategic plan supporting digital transformation and emerging business needs.
  • Keep current with industry trends and emerging technologies to anticipate new and evolving business needs.
  • Communicate decisions, priorities, and initiative information to relevant staff.
  • Align application and information strategy with the overall business strategy.
  • Serve as a key member of the university IT senior leadership team and a thought leader in the broader IT@WashU community.
  • Engage stakeholders to promote and grow adoption of technology initiatives.
  • Define requirements for new technology implementations and establish clear business benefits and ROI.
  • Work with university leaders, IT finance, and the portfolio and project management office to translate strategic vision into program proposals.
  • Oversee prioritization, planning, and execution of strategic and critical tactical projects to meet objectives and priorities of the university strategic plan.
  • Champion strategic IT projects across non-medical campuses as assigned by university leadership.

Operational Management

  • Lead WashU IT organizational units providing services for the academic mission and administration across the entire university.
  • Lead continuous process improvements to drive down cost and increase efficiency and effectiveness of university IT operations and system maintenance.
  • Ensure continuous delivery of IT services through oversight of service level agreements with executive leadership.
  • Support integrated and comprehensive support system and service delivery through collaboration with university IT leadership.
  • Oversee operational support for all center-led IT solutions and related end-user services for academic and administrative missions.
  • Represent non-medical campuses in developing, maintaining, and testing IT disaster recovery and business continuity plans.

Organizational Management

  • Build, grow, and oversee the AVC and executive directors for assigned organization, each managing teams of professional IT staff.
  • Work with senior IT leadership team to develop and execute succession plans for IT at the university.
  • Supervise, recruit, develop, motivate, mentor, and retain high-performing staff through performance management, salary planning, career development, and training.
  • Cultivate a culture of personal responsibility and accountability.
