Position Overview
The Infrastructure Services unit of UC Berkeley delivers essential IT services that support evolving campus needs.
Position SummaryThe Storage System Administrator maintains the SAN, NAS, object and cloud storage, backup and recovery systems for the campus. Responsibilities include installation, upgrades, policy development, customer support, and system troubleshooting.
Responsibilities- Researches and implements systems, services and tech solutions to support enterprise storage and UCBackup.
- Installs, upgrades, and configures hardware, software and networking components.
- Manages centralized servers and recommends new hardware purchases.
- Handles service requests and incident tickets for storage and backup, providing customer service and continuous improvement.
- Conducts system programming and support activities.
- Participates in professional development and training programs.
- Self‑motivated, strong problem‑solving skills, able to meet deadlines.
- Clear technical documentation writing.
- Knowledge of performance monitoring and corrective actions.
- Familiarity with cybersecurity best practices (firewalls, certificates).
- Experience with NFS, SMB, iSCSI, Object storage (S3) and Fibre Channel.
- Experience supporting VMware infrastructure for storage.
- Basic TCP/IP networking skills.
- Experience with storage technologies such as Net App, Cloudian, Hitachi, Wasabi, Pure, etc.
- Knowledge of enterprise backup software (Commvault, Cohesity, Veeam).
- Understanding of design, appl. of tech to business needs.
- Ability to adapt equipment to user needs.
- Knowledge of how system management affects users and related functions.
- Strong communication skills at all organizational levels.
- Problem identification and resolution capabilities.
- Knowledge of on‑prem and cloud storage solutions (AWS, Azure, GCP).
- Basic scripting knowledge.
- Knowledge of Linux, Windows and project management fundamentals.
- General ITIL Foundations knowledge.
Annual salary range: $ – $ (Step 1.0 – Step 4.0). Exempt, monthly paid. Full‑time staff receive at least 80 hours of paid professional development annually. UC Berkeley offers a comprehensive benefits package.
