Database Administrator Senior

Overview

Join Multnomah County as a Senior Database Administrator, where your technical skills will help us build a better foundation for the community we serve. In this role, you aren’t just “maintaining a system”; you are playing a lead part in how the County uses information to help people. You will balance the important daily work of keeping our databases running with exciting new projects, such as moving our data systems from on‑site servers to Azure Cloud and Snowflake.

You’ll be the expert we turn to for making sure our data is safe, organized, and ready for the future.

• Manage the daily operations of our databases, ensuring they have sufficient space and are correctly configured.
• Lead the migration to cloud platforms, redesigning data storage from older on‑site setups to modern cloud technology such as Azure, Google GCP, and AWS.
• Design backup and recovery plans to protect data and enable rapid restoration in case of failure.
• Identify and eliminate performance bottlenecks, improving overall system speed.
• Create data models using modeling tools to map how our various information pieces interrelate.
• Mentor other IT staff, solving complex coding problems and training them on new database tools.
• Install patches and updates to keep software secure, while staying informed about new technological trends.

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience considered.
• Minimum five years of IT development and database administration experience (equivalent to nine years of qualifying training and/or experience).
• Advanced knowledge and hands‑on skills in Azure Cloud, Snowflake, and business intelligence data marts and data warehousing.
• Extensive experience building ETL processes for reporting.
• Proficiency with database logging tools such as Idera, Red Gate Monitor, Splunk.
• Working knowledge of BI reporting platforms including Tableau, Power BI, SSRS.
• Advanced skills in installing, tuning, maintaining, securing, and administering on‑prem MS SQL Server and cloud environments.
• Experience with MS Integration Services (SSIS) and SQL Server platform development using T‑SQL.
• Strong understanding of security, authentication, and authorization in Microsoft Active Directory and Azure Entra .
• Knowledge of backup and recovery design for MS SQL Server and Azure.
• Basic networking, firewall, Windows Server administration, SAN/NAS storage, virtualization (Hyper‑V or VMWare), and high‑availability technologies.
• Experience with administrative scripting in C#, Power Shell or similar tools.
• Ability to pass a criminal records check.

• Experience administering Tableau Server.
• Experience administering Power BI Server.

Official work location:
Multnomah Building, 501 SE Hawthorne Blvd., Portland, OR 97214. The position is designated for routine telework, primarily working from home with required attendance for team meetings and other onsite events. Various work schedules are available, all requiring daily hours for core hours. All employees must reside in Oregon or Washington.

This position’s pay range is intended to provide general guidance on earning potential. Actual compensation will be determined in accordance with the Oregon Equal Pay Law and will consider the candidate’s relevant experience, education, seniority, training, and tenure.
