Systems Administrator, IT Support
Overview
The Colorado Department of State (CDOS) is seeking a Systems Engineer to join the Information Technology Services (ITS) Division’s Systems Operations Unit. This role maintains and supports the agency’s critical infrastructure, including domain servers, web and application servers, and virtualization/cloud environments, ensuring secure and reliable operations for statewide services.
ResponsibilitiesThe primary responsibilities of the Systems Engineer include:
- Operating system and base application support, maintenance, and administration for Linux and other platforms.
- Webserver and application server software support, maintenance, and administration.
- Virtualization and cloud support, maintenance, and administration.
- Development software support, maintenance, and administration.
- Professional development, secondary (backup) administration, and other duties as assigned.
Secondary (backup) duties encompass:
- Linux Identity Management support, maintenance, and administration.
- Linux/Automation support, maintenance, and administration.
- SAN networking and storage array support, maintenance, and administration.
- Other Linux application support and administration duties as assigned.
The position requires strict confidentiality of all information and compliance with state and agency policies regarding professional conduct.
Minimum QualificationsApplicants must demonstrate a total of three (3) years of applicable professional experience or education in a related field. Eligible candidates may qualify under one of the following options:
- Option 1 – Experience
:
Three years of professional experience as a systems administrator focused on Linux operating systems and base application support. - Option 2 – Experience and/or Education
: A combination of related education, formal apprenticeship, certification, and/or experience equivalent to three years, as defined in Option 1. Applicants must submit an unofficial transcript (or equivalent documentation) to qualify for this option.
Transcripts from foreign institutions must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency by a NACES-credentialed service and provided with the application.
Preferred Qualifications and Competencies- Previous state service experience.
- Proficiency in Linux system and application administration.
- Experience maintaining webserver and web application server software.
- Knowledge of Kubernetes, Azure Cloud, AWS Cloud.
- Strong understanding of web application security.
- Experience with Docker/Podman and WAF.
- Dev Ops experience.
- Python programming experience.
- Storage administration and SAN networking experience.
- Java-based application server administration.
- Understanding of Java development tools and environments.
- Commitment to advancing a diverse and inclusive perspective.
- Competencies:
reasoning and deduction, communication skills (written and verbal), problem solving, research skills, information processing, interpersonal skills, and understanding of accessibility standards.
- Colorado residency required at the time of application.
- Travel may be required to the state disaster recovery facility or for training opportunities.
- Successful completion of a background check is mandatory.
