Position Description

West Pierce Fire & Rescue (WPFR) is hiring an Information Technology Technician with a tentative start date of August 1. The IT Division is located at Station 20 in Lakewood, WA. This position requires work at multiple locations and is not fully remote.

Schedule options (Monday–Friday) include: five 8-hour workdays, four 10-hour workdays, or five 9-hour workdays (averaging 40 hours per week). Remote work has to be approved by WPFR.

Essential Job Functions
  • Resource management of data processing system hardware and software, including local‑area and wide‑area networks, file servers, telecommunications equipment, and other related database management technologies through installation, preventative maintenance, reconfiguration, and end‑user support.
  • Perform cyber‑security monitoring and mitigation on all IT systems.
  • Provide technical support to the IT Manager and to end users.
  • Research, recommend, implement, and maintain hardware, software, SAAS, NAAS, and associated equipment to improve the District’s efficiency and emergency response.
  • Execute daily Systems Manager functions on Windows servers and client machines on the LAN/WAN.
  • Perform data backup, troubleshoot hardware and software, and manage SAAS/NAAS interfaces using best practices.
  • Provide interface support to ArcGIS (Arc Info & Arc View) and other ESRI products.
  • Act as liaison for members of other agencies while providing computer support.
  • Develop and utilize training techniques to maximize personnel’s use of data system equipment.
  • Resolve and assist in extraordinary or difficult data processing problems.
  • Prepare oral, written, and graphic presentations and maintain technical reports.
  • Perform related duties as necessary to guarantee an effective data processing role.

  • Effective use of tact and courtesy with the public, co‑workers, and vendors.

  • Proficiency with multi‑function phone systems and standard office software.
  • Support and working knowledge of telecommunications, data processing, SAAS, NAAS, and peripheral equipment.
  • General knowledge of programming techniques and system design.
  • Documentation of user controls, procedures, conversions, and problem solutions.
  • Understanding of hyper‑V and current Windows Server OS.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Exchange/Outlook, Office 365, SharePoint.
  • Knowledge of LAN/WAN using routers, switches, Wi‑Fi access points, firewalls, and Windows networking.
  • Hardware troubleshooting skills.
  • SQL scripting ability.
  • Effective relationship building and independent judgment.
  • Preparation and presentation of proposals in clear and concise manner.
  • Travel ability between various worksites.
  • Training personnel in all aspects of data processing system usage.
Recruiting Requirements
  • Knowledge of modern data processing equipment, peripheral equipment, and Windows Server/desktop environments; understanding of Exchange email and basic hardware troubleshooting.
  • Professional experience in modern data processing, peripheral equipment, and Windows Server environments. A combination of these areas is preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license to drive in the state of Washington.
Education and Experience
  • Associate’s degree in Computer or Information Technology, or related field deemed adequate by the Fire Chief or designee.
  • Minimum of four recent years of experience in the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Desirable:
    Bachelor’s degree, familiarity with command‑line and Power Shell, Cisco IOS and configuration, fire service knowledge, programming language proficiency (C++, SQL, Perl, Visual Studio), additional language proficiency, Microsoft certifications (Azure Fundamentals, Azure Administrator, Office 365 Fundamentals, or other relevant certifications).
Physical Requirements
  • Communicate over the telephone and in person.
  • Carrying, moving, and operating objects, tools, and machines.
  • Lift/move up to 50 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 75 pounds.
  • Bend, reach, crawl, kneel, climb, and access equipment in awkward positions.
  • Maintain acceptable auditory and visual senses.
