Network Engineer I (Position)
Center for High Performance Computing (CHPC) is a cornerstone of innovation at the University of Utah, providing large‑scale computational and data services, along with creative network services. From climate modeling to drug discovery, CHPC empowers researchers to solve complex problems through a massive ecosystem of over 50,000 CPU cores, 1,000+ GPU resources, and 50PB+ of storage.
CHPC seeks a network engineer to support connectivity internally and externally to multiple remote environments. The position is full‑time staff with benefits and requires 90+% on‑site attendance. The primary work location is the University of Utah Downtown Data Center, with associated work at the home office on the university campus and occasional work at a data center in St. George, UT.
ResponsibilitiesThe network engineer will:
- Design, install, maintain, and document CHPC’s Ethernet and Infiniband networks, including network cabling, fiber plant, equipment installation, physical maintenance, relocation and equipment retirement at all CHPC locations.
- Configure and monitor network equipment, perform daily changes, maintenance, and troubleshooting to provide a stable, reliable, and resilient network.
- Support high‑security network segments that are part of CHPC’s regulated research computing environments.
- Collaborate closely with CHPC staff, system administrators, software engineers, faculty, research teams, and students to design and provide solutions that meet computational research requirements.
- Produce comprehensive and accurate documentation with attention to detail.
- Participate in scheduled or emergency downtimes and work beyond normal business hours as needed.
- Collect and analyze network telemetry, convert counters, netflows and other statistics to support operational and performance needs.
- Work with the monitoring team to visualize environments for active maintenance.
- Use tools such as perfSONAR to support large bandwidth transfers across the WAN.
- Collaborate with the automation team to streamline network infrastructure deployments.
- Develop proficiency with Infiniband, RoCE, and other cluster fabric technologies, and contribute to troubleshooting and supporting system admin teams.
