Position: Mainframe MQ Administrator - Remote / Telecommute

Mainframe MQ Administrator

The Mainframe MQ Administrator will support and manage MQ environments across mainframe and distributed platforms. The role involves administration, monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimization of messaging infrastructure, ensuring reliable communication between applications and systems. The candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams, support system integrations, and maintain messaging environments following operational and security standards.

Requirement/Must Have:

  • At least 5 years of experience in IBM MQ support.
  • Hands-on experience with MQ on z/OS, including creating and maintaining queue managers and objects such as queues and channels.
  • Understanding of how applications interact with MQ using APIs.
  • Proficiency with z/OS, ISPF, JCL, SDSF, JES, PDSE, VSAM, and related utilities.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities.

Experience:

  • Experience with MQ monitoring solutions for real-time and historical analysis, including troubleshooting and performance tuning.
  • Experience with MQ dashboarding tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Ironstream, and Splunk.
  • Experience working with SMF data for statistical analysis.
  • Experience with MQ alerting configurations including thresholds, traps, flows, and notifications.
  • Experience with automation for MQ operations, syslog messages, and related functionality.
  • Experience with queue streaming and message replication features.
  • Experience managing MQ lifecycle including upgrades, maintenance, testing, implementations, and integrations.
  • Experience with queue sharing groups, coupling facilities, shared message data sets, and shared queueing.
  • Experience with various MQ connectivity methods including clustering, channels, client connections, and triggering.
  • Experience with MQ logging including active logs, archive logs, and checkpointing.
  • Experience working with vendor support for troubleshooting and documentation.
  • Experience supporting disaster recovery exercises.
  • Experience implementing system changes during defined change windows.

Responsibilities:

  • Administer and support MQ environments across mainframe and distributed platforms.
  • Monitor messaging infrastructure and resolve operational issues.
  • Configure and maintain MQ objects including queues, channels, and queue managers.
  • Support integration with enterprise applications and services.
  • Maintain messaging flows and related documentation.
  • Create diagrams and documentation for messaging architecture.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure system stability and performance.
  • Provide timely support and customer service to internal stakeholders.
  • Participate in periodic on-call rotations and support technical war rooms when required.

Should Have:

  • Experience with MQ on IBMi environments.
  • Application development experience.
  • Mainframe operations experience.
  • Basic knowledge of containers and enterprise integration platforms.
  • Experience with automation and monitoring tools.
  • Experience with high availability and replication environments.
  • Experience with secure and isolated environments supporting government clients.
  • Ability to use AI tools to analyze data and provide recommendations.
  • Ability to use productivity AI tools to recap meetings and draft communications.

Qualification And

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
