Digital Accessibility Specialist
This temporary position is fully remote and limited to a maximum duration of 18 months. The role is eligible for remote work for candidates residing in states where the City of Chesapeake authorizes remote workers. Note that this position is not eligible to participate in the Virginia Retirement System (VRS). The role is full‑time, 40 hours per week, Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm with potential overtime in emergencies.
Responsibilities- Review websites, applications, and digital content for compliance with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and Section 508 standards.
- Conduct accessibility testing using industry‑standard tools and provide detailed findings and recommendations.
- Provide remediation support for frequently used and high‑visibility digital documents on the City’s website, including PDFs, PowerPoint presentations, and web‑based materials.
- Assist with the delivery of accessibility training for staff in coordination with the Web Team.
- Collaborate with departments to remediate digital documents and ensure content meets accessibility requirements.
- Offer guidance and subject‑matter expertise on accessible design principles, usability, and inclusive content development.
- Support the Web Team in integrating accessibility standards into digital projects, workflows, and ongoing initiatives.
- Monitor existing web content to ensure continued accuracy, relevance, and accessibility compliance.
- Participate in departmental initiatives and cross‑functional projects related to digital accessibility and user experience.
- Attend internal meetings as assigned, providing insight and recommendations on accessibility standards, compliance, and implementation strategies.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Associate’s degree in web design, writing, graphic arts, or a closely related field.
- Minimum one year of related, full‑time equivalent experience.
- Knowledge of current best practices in online content and service development.
- Experience with accessibility testing tools and assistive technologies.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
- Experience creating and remediating accessible documents.
- Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat Pro, PAC solutions, Equidox, and other web accessibility evaluation tools.
- Knowledge of HTML/CSS and prior training or instruction in accessibility or a related certification.
- Knowledge of WCAG 2.1 Level AA, Section 508, and digital accessibility principles.
- Experience with additional assistive technologies.
- Prior experience in a municipal or public sector environment.

SalaryStarting at $49,373, depending on qualifications. Pay basis: semi‑monthly.
