About this Role
The VM Migration Expert will be responsible for end to end execution of VMware based virtual machine migrations between datacenters using VMware HCX
, ensuring minimal downtime, controlled cutovers, and stable post migration operations. The role requires strong hands on expertise across VMware, Windows, Linux
, and close coordination with infrastructure and application teams.
Intake, validate VM inventory and support wave wise migration planning
Perform pre migration checks (VMware Tools, snapshots, power state, disks, connectivity)
Build and configure Power Flex Grid using Power Flex deployment and implementation tools
Create and manage VMware HCX Mobility Groups and initiate Bulk/RAV replications
Monitor replication health and remediate sync failures; complete cutover readiness checks
Execute batch VM cutovers during approved migration windows and monitor HCX jobs
Power on migrated VMs at target DC and validate OS boot and service auto start
Perform post migration validation (OS checks, DNS/NTP/LDAP reachability, application ports) and obtain app sign off
Decommission source VMs post cutover, clean up orphaned VMDKs, and raise decom tickets per client process
Maintain migration reporting (dashboards, wave completion, KPIs) and coordinate with Infra/App teams, CAB, and hypercare
Required Qualifications:Demonstrated experience in datacenter infrastructure and VM migration operations
, or equivalent experience gained through work, training, military service, or formal education.
Qualifications:
8 to 10 years of hands on experience in VMware based infrastructure operations and migrations
Strong expertise in VMware vSphere, HCX (Bulk, RAV), vCenter, ESXi
Proven experience migrating Windows and Linux virtual machines across datacenters
Solid understanding of VM lifecycle, snapshots, disk layouts, and VMTools
Working knowledge of storage platforms (Power Flex preferred) and datastore management
Ability to troubleshoot migration failures related to replication, connectivity, and OS boot issues
Good understanding of network fundamentals (VLANs, IP changes, DNS, firewall dependencies)
Experience working in change controlled enterprise environments with CAB participation
Strong coordination and communication skills for working with infra and application stakeholders
VMware certifications (VCP / HCX exposure) and automation exposure (PowerCLI / scripting) are a plus
