Data Science Intern

Data Science Intern at Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company (HSB), a subsidiary of Munich Re. The internship supports large‑scale machine learning projects across major business areas such as insurance, engineering, and technology solutions. Internship starts in May
2026 and will follow a hybrid schedule based in Hartford, CT.

• Collaborate with HSB’s Data Science team on scalable machine learning projects.
• Analyze large data sets to uncover opportunities for product and process optimization.
• Partner with senior leadership and other professionals to develop data‑driven insights and solutions.
• Participate in community outreach and networking events.
• Assist in the development and deployment of data science workflows, including experimentation with generative AI models where applicable.

Desired major(s) and level of education:

• MS or PhD student in Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related applied science with a heavy quantitative emphasis.
• Exceptional undergraduate students will also be considered.

Core skills:

• Strong programming experience with Python, R, or SQL and the ability to write well‑documented production‑level code.
• Practical knowledge and experience with statistical methods.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills; ability to work creatively in a problem‑solving environment.
• Basic software engineering skills, including Git, API, Docker, and Dev Ops best practices.
• Experience with Spark and distributed computing (plus)
• Experience with Azure cloud development (plus)
• Experience with learning frameworks such as PyTorch or Tensor Flow (plus)
• Experience developing or experimenting with generative AI models (ex. LLMs) and associated utilities/workflows (plus)

• Hands‑on experience with large‑scale data science projects.
• Exposure to senior leadership and networking opportunities.
