Civic Data Analyst (Sustainable Mobility)

DescriptionAlta Planning + Design seeks a Civic Data Analyst (Sustainable Mobility) for our Huntsville office. This position focuses on sustainable transportation and data analysis in a multidisciplinary environment. The role involves developing analytical solutions in R, Python, and GIS, collaborating across the firm, and addressing mobility and access challenges through data‑driven insights.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities- Serve as a technical expert and analyst across various disciplines and regions, developing prototypes of repeatable analysis in R, Python, and GIS to advance place‑based sustainable transportation solutions.
- Engage with planners, designers, and engineers to understand data analytics needs, priorities, and expectations, fostering a data‑informed decision‑making culture.
- Lead development of new analytical products aligned with the firm's objectives and multidisciplinary practice.
- Delve into data analysis and visualization components of client projects and R&D efforts, employing complex methodologies.
- Address mobility and access challenges through innovative analytical solutions, articulating data‑driven narratives through reports, technical memos, and presentations.
- Identify labor‑intensive processes and explore avenues to streamline and automate them, creating organization‑wide value.
- Work on projects including active transportation plans, safety action plans, complete streets planning, safe routes to school, new mobility plans, and economic benefit studies.
- Bachelor’s Degree in a quantitative field (Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science) or in Planning, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Sciences, or Engineering with experience in software development and/or data science.
- Proficiency in Python and/or R, SQL.
- Strong quantitative analysis skills, including data analysis, cross‑tabulation, and interpretation.
- Strong understanding of databases, GIS, coding, and advanced transportation planning.
- GIS proficiency with open‑source tools (PostGIS, QGIS, geopandas) and ESRI suite (ArcGIS Pro, Spatial Analyst, Network Analyst).
- Ability to create informative data visualizations via code (e.g., D3, ggplot, matplotlib, plotly, kepler.gl).
- Experience designing, implementing, and documenting analytical solutions entirely with code.
- Familiarity with data specifications and industry acronyms such as OSM, MDS, GTFS, GBFS, GPS, CDS.
- Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Additional beneficial skills:
Master’s degree in related fields, consulting or public‑sector experience, AICP certification, Deltek VantagePoint usage, professional association participation, applied statistics or machine learning techniques to transportation, knowledge of deploying web analytical solutions (Flask, Django, Fast‑API, Tableau, PowerBI, ArcGIS Enterprise, R‑Shiny).

Hybrid work schedule; most employees work from home three days per week. - Compensation: $65,000–$76,000 annually, placement based on experience, skill-sets, and qualifications.
