Database Administrator, Systems Administrator
The Orange County Information Technologies Department has an opening for a Database Administrator. The work involves the responsibility for installing, configuring, maintaining, and securing all County database systems across multiple versions and environments. An employee in this class follows best practices to produce secure solutions and works on a wide variety of systems, including disaster recovery and backup. This position is responsible for enhancing and expanding the use of existing database systems to improve security, automation, query scripting, performance monitoring, and alerting capabilities.
The incumbent also investigates new industry developments, such as system productivity tools, design and programming methodologies, documentation approaches, and makes recommendations for current and projected use. Additionally, this role will support developers in implementing proper database design, configuration, and standards, as well as performance tuning and query optimization.
Work is performed under the general direction of the Chief Information Officer while typically reporting to the IT Applications Manager or designee with considerable leeway to exercise independent judgment within the framework of applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in the performance of duties, both in terms of planning and accomplishing work, and in making decisions regarding customer needs and requests and conducting project assignments.
Supervision over others is not required of this position. Position does related work as required.
Position location is Hillsborough, NC and this position does require in-office designated days each week.
Background check is required. Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Check is required.
NOTE:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, or a closely related field AND five (5) years of work experience which primarily involved server administration, database system administration, and database design; three (3) years of which must include work experience in maintaining MS SQL database administration that includes security, data integrity, backups and restores.
Experience with paginated report development using SSRS and data visualizations using Power BI.
An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined above. A higher degree does not substitute for work experience.
Certification as a Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA): SQL Database Administration, MCSA: SQL Database Development, or Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE):
Data Management and Analytics may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience as defined above. Equivalent certifications for any currently supported version of Microsoft SQL Server may be accepted in place of those listed.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
All offers of employment are conditioned upon successful clearance of a background check. Employment cannot commence until the employee has been cleared.
This position follows a hybrid work schedule. Once eligible for a hybrid work schedule, the selected candidate will be required to work on‑site on designated days each week to support operational needs and foster effective collaboration. Candidates must be able to reliably commute to the office and demonstrate the ability to perform successfully in both in‑person and remote work environments.
