Computer Support Specialist
Provides technical assistance in support of software, hardware, and networking tools used by employees of the Montana Department of Transportation. Responsible for developing training materials and delivering formal technical and computer training, both in the classroom and one‑on‑one, for MDT employees. Assists with scheduling, conducting, and coordinating computer software, hardware installation, and configuration. Performs setup procedures for new equipment, installs and customizes software packages, and troubleshoots applications when problems occur, ensuring compliance with MDT network standards.
This position is part of a career ladder with career advancement opportunities. Reports to the Customer Support Supervisor and does not supervise others.
- Provide technical assistance for software, hardware, and networking tools.
- Develop training materials and conduct computer training sessions.
- Schedule, conduct, and coordinate installation and configuration of computers, printers, scanners, and other peripherals.
- Set up, customize, and troubleshoot equipment and applications to ensure compliance with network standards.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field, or 4 years of related experience in lieu of a degree.
- At least 1 year of experience in computer systems administration or IT support, including hardware and software troubleshooting, deployment, installation, configuration, and management.
- Alternative combinations of related experience or education may be considered.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to provide excellent customer service.
- Knowledge of computer operating systems such as Microsoft Windows and computer networking principles.
- Ability to assist employees with personal computers, printers, scanners, and other peripherals.

$29.38 – $29.38 hourly. Telework Eligible (Full‑time telework is not available; telework schedule must be supervisor approved.)
Other Information- Must pass a fingerprint background investigation.
- Driver’s record will be verified. Successful applicants must sign a release form authorizing the Department to obtain permanent driving records and comply with vehicle use policies.
