This is a permanent full-time 40 hours per week position with the Bureau of Information and Technology for a Network Administrator. For more information on the Bureau of Information and Technology, please visit (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). .
This position will configure, install, and maintain edge network devices such as routers, firewalls, switches, wireless access points, wireless bridges, and cellular boosters from vendors Juniper, Cisco, Fortinet, Ubiquiti, and various others that are owned or supported by the State of South Dakota. Overnight travel will be required at times to diagnose problems, install hardware, and meet with clients. Representing BIT at monthly meetings, trainings, presentations, and site visits is also required.
This position will work out of the BIT office in Sioux Falls, SD. Hybrid work from home (maximum of 2 days per week) will be considered but not guaranteed after 12 months of employment, but this position is not eligible for full-time remote.

Minimum of a 2 year degree from a university or technical school is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:- Transport Control Protocol (TCP) and User Defined Protocol (UDP);
- Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) and subnetting;
- Wide Area Networks (WANs), Local Area Networks (LANs), and Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs);
- static and dynamic routing protocols such as BGP and OSPF;
- Network Address Translation (NAT);
- Virtual Private Networks (VPNs);
- wireless technologies such as 802.11 and Bluetooth and wireless security such as 802.1x and WPA;
- customer service techniques and principles;
- Microsoft Excel, One Note, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, Visio, and Word;
- Windows Server Active Directory and DHCP;
- Service Now Service Management; and,
- network tools such as Junos Space, Forti Manager, Forti Analyzer, Cisco Wireless Controller, Cisco Catalyst Center, Ubiqitui UISP, Clear Pass Policy Manager, Solarwinds.
- reserve a hotel room for overnight stays and travel multiple times a month within South Dakota;
- configure, install, and maintain edge routers, firewalls, switches, wireless access points, wireless bridges, and cellular boosters;
- maintain in use, in stock, and retired network hardware inventory in Service Now;
- be familiar with features of network management tools from Juniper, Cisco, Fortinet, HP Aruba, and Ubiquiti;
- analyze firewall, switch, and wireless logs and reports using built in tools or Solarwinds;
- be familiar with and comfortably use CLI commands on network hardware;
- proactively search for software updates for network management servers and network devices;
- lead change requests for software upgrades, certificate renewals, and hardware replacements during maintenance windows;
- attend meetings, conferences, and site visits with school districts;
- be familiar with and be able to train school districts on Fortinet content filter features;
- troubleshoot and solve network problems;
- ability to collect and review packet captures in research and troubleshooting efforts;
- interact with and hold accountable hardware vendors and resellers on technical support cases, quotes, and purchase orders;
- be on call for one week approximately four times a year;
- knowledge of IP addressing using Control Panel or Command Prompt;
- coordinate activities with clients and contractors;
- communicate information concisely and accurately, both oral and written;
- work in a team environment and independently;
- create and update technical documentation including network layouts using Microsoft Visio;
- use good judgment of State computers and networks to safeguard the organization's data;
- maintain composure during stressful events and conversations;
- interact with other technology disciplines and teams to implement or fix cross-supported systems;
- understand project management responsibilities such as communication, organization, and deadlines; and,
- work quickly to complete the responsibilities of the position without heavy oversight.
