Position: 257410 Senior IT Specialist

We are seeking an experienced and proactive Senior IT Specialist to join our Digital Department. This senior technical role is responsible for maintaining and supporting NHS Dumfries & Galloway’s complex computing, voice, and data communication infrastructure. You will ensure the high availability, security, and resilience of critical clinical and corporate systems across a region wide network, supporting approximately 5,000 users and 400+ servers.

You will act as a technical lead within your specialist area, resolving complex issues escalated from User Support, supporting major clinical and business systems, and contributing to infrastructure planning, disaster recovery, and continuous service improvement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide specialist support for Local and Wide Area Networks across NHS Dumfries & Galloway.
  • Deliver expert support for server environments including Microsoft Server, VMware, Unix/Linux.
  • Manage and maintain Cisco network, wireless, telephony, and firewall technologies.
  • Lead the planning, configuration, installation, and optimisation of network and server infrastructure.
  • Implement, maintain, and test disaster recovery and backup procedures.
  • Conduct proactive monitoring to ensure availability, security, and performance of IT systems.
  • Provide guidance, mentoring, and technical leadership to User Support and IM&T colleagues.
  • Produce and maintain accurate technical documentation, system inventories, and audit trails.
  • Liaise with external contractors, vendors, and NHS stakeholders to ensure controlled and coordinated delivery of services.
  • Support enforcement of IT security policies and best practice standards.
The Type of Person We’re Looking For

A highly skilled and proactive technical specialist who thrives in a fast paced, complex infrastructure environment. Someone with strong problem solving ability, excellent judgement under pressure, and the confidence to lead on major technical issues. They will be a natural collaborator—able to explain complex concepts clearly, support and mentor colleagues, and work effectively with clinical, operational, and technical stakeholders.

This person will have a deep understanding of networks, servers, and security, combined with a calm, methodical approach to resolving critical faults. They should be adaptable, self motivated, and committed to continuous learning, with the ability to balance competing priorities while maintaining high standards of service delivery.
