Digital Archivist

Job Title:

Job Purpose

The Digital Archivist will play a key role in supporting the discovery and access of HILA's born‑digital archival collections by carrying out workflows for the processing, preservation, and dissemination of digital assets across languages, content types, and file formats.

Core Duties
  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to maintain the flow of born‑digital collection materials through accessioning and processing workflows.
  • Implement and execute plans to appraise, process, describe, preserve, and provide access to born‑digital materials under OAIS‑compliant workflows.
  • Assist in determining policies and procedures for curation of born‑digital materials, acting as liaison to curatorial staff and internal content producers.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and review of technologies and their application to digital archival processing and researcher usability.
  • Assist in selecting, configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting hardware and software used for accessioning, processing, and preservation.
  • Support the migration and normalization of data backlogs.
  • Create and maintain documentation for workflows and procedures; maintain and report workflow metrics.
  • Identify and collaborate with partners within the Library & Archives, Hoover Institution, Stanford University, and beyond regarding education and outreach activities.
  • Engage in regional and national communities, integrating best and emerging practices.
  • May supervise other staff and student assistants.
Minimum Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Advanced degree in Library Science or a relevant academic discipline.
  • Minimum three years of relevant experience in a library, archives or museum, or a combination of education and experience.
  • Certification in digital archives and/or relevant graduate‑level born‑digital processing coursework.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal, judgment, and diplomacy skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of digital formats, asset management, preservation solutions, migration, reformatting, and metadata mapping.
  • Experience developing and implementing workflows for transfer, arrangement, and description of digital materials.
  • Experience with forensic tools such as hardware write‑blockers, FTK Imager, Bit Curator utilities, and tools like DROID for fixity and validation.
  • Knowledge of archival arrangement, description principles for born‑digital materials, professional metadata standards, controlled vocabularies, and linked data principles.
  • Experience with collection management software such as Archive Space; knowledge of EAD and XML.
  • Proficiency with the MS Office suite.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize workload.

Preferred/Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience with scripting or programming languages to automate workflows and processes.
  • Experience with digital object optimization, including OCR, speech‑to‑text, and other machine‑learning text recognition output.
Certifications and Licenses

None required.

Physical Requirements
  • Desk‑based computer tasks.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, and reaching.
  • Ability to lift/carry up to 10 pounds; occasional lifting of objects up to 40 pounds; push a fully‑loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights of 4‑10 feet; exposure to dust and mold.
Working Conditions
  • May require some evening and weekend work across multiple time zones.
  • Opportunities for a remote work schedule may be considered.
Pay Range

Hybrid employees: $90,524 – $112,920 per annum.

Remote employees: $69,361 – $97,372 per annum.
