Underwriting Specialist OR Executive Underwriter – Excess Casualty

Zurich Insurance is seeking an experienced Underwriting Specialist OR Executive Underwriter – Excess Casualty to join our Construction team. Applicants may be based in Chicago, IL;
Overland Park, KS;
Pittsburgh, PA;
Independence, OH; or Minneapolis, MN. The position supports a hybrid schedule with three days per week in the office/market.

• Develop and maintain relationships with broker partners and customers in the Construction industry.
• Leverage casualty underwriting acumen across risk assessment, exposure evaluation, and pricing to generate and maintain a profitable book of new and renewal business.
• Work collaboratively across business units including claims, finance, risk engineering, actuary, and technical underwriting.
• Use market‑facing, negotiation, and interpersonal skills to grow and develop relationships with preferred distribution partners in an assigned territory.
• Underwrite and price a solid renewal book.
• Identify and analyze new growth opportunities.
• Ensure accounts are qualified, meet the organization’s appetite, and are balanced with sound business opportunity.
• Conduct agent/broker/customer and on‑site calls with a planned purpose.
• Oversee negotiations of terms & conditions and close deals.
• Ensure cross‑sell within areas of responsibility to increase product density with Zurich customers.

• High School Diploma or equivalent and 3+ years of experience in underwriting or market‑facing area.
• High School Diploma or equivalent and 6+ years of experience in claims or underwriting support area.
• Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an associate degree and 1+ year of experience in underwriting or market‑facing area.
• Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an associate degree, 4+ years of experience in claims or underwriting support area, and knowledge of line/s of business, legal and regulatory guidelines, time restraints for quotes, and Microsoft Office.
• Executive Underwriter qualifications:
  High School Diploma or equivalent and 5+ years in underwriting or market‑facing area; or 10+ years in claims or underwriting support area; or Certified Apprentice with associate degree and 3+ years in underwriting or market‑facing; or Certified Apprentice with associate degree, 8+ years in claims or underwriting support area, plus the knowledge items above.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

• Bachelor’s Degree.

The combined salary range for this position is $75,000.00 – $. The Underwriting Specialist range is $75,000.00 – $ with a short‑term incentive bonus eligibility of 10%. The Executive Underwriter range is $98,500.00 – $ with a short‑term incentive bonus eligibility of 15%. Additional rewards may include short‑term incentive bonuses and merit increases.
