Insurance Underwriter

Overview

We are seeking an experienced ASO/Stop Loss Underwriter in a remote capacity, with a preference for candidates based in Albuquerque, NM. This role will be responsible for reviewing RFP submissions, analyzing large claims, making underwriting adjustments, and finalizing competitive quotes. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of risk assessment, benefit structures, and ASO/Stop Loss pricing strategies.

• Review new business and renewal RFP submissions after initial data entry by underwriting staff.
• Assess completeness and appropriateness of broker-provided data, terms, and requests.
• Identify discrepancies between current contract terms and requested changes.
• Request additional data when necessary.
• Evaluate standard ASO/Stop Loss rate development modules for necessary modifications.
• Adjust credibility factors to balance risk between carrier and client.
• Analyze large claim details and determine projection adjustments for stop loss calculations.
• Decide on the use of lasers and evaluate impact on risk and pricing.
• Recommend network access fee and variable discount adjustments based on competitive renewal data.
• Select the most suitable contract type (e.g., spec/agg., 24/12, 12/12, 12/24).
• Identify when to pursue or decline business opportunities based on group performance.
• Review quote recommendations with Manager or Director.
• Incorporate feedback and finalize underwriting changes.
• Outline contingencies for quotes and hand off finalized details to underwriting staff for marketing submission.
• Apply subject matter expertise to help rebuild and enhance ASO/Stop Loss underwriting modules once familiar with internal tools.

• Minimum 5 years of prior underwriting experience in ASO and Stop Loss required.
• Strong understanding of risk assessment, large claims analysis, and credibility adjustments.
• Proficiency in evaluating contract terms, benefit structures, and competitive pricing.
• Ability to make sound business decisions on pursuing or declining opportunities.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Remote position; preference for candidates based in Albuquerque, NM.
