Summary of the Position
The Underwriter is responsible for new business development as well as retention, growth and profitability on an assigned book of business within defined authority.
Position Functions
- Underwriting Authority, as per Underwriting Authority Agreement, with emphasis on account retention and loss ratio profitability for assigned book of business.
- Perform necessary review and analysis of submitted underwriting information received on assigned book of business.
- Manage the day-to-day requests on assigned accounts as necessary.
- Promote broker relationship management by understanding broker relationship contacts. Brokers may range from large multinational firms to small independent firms and may include retail and wholesale firms.
- Travel, likely on a monthly basis, to visit brokers to reinforce good working relationships. Additional travel for company wide events / meetings on a quarterly basis.
- Perform other projects or tasks as assigned by Management.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrate effective interpersonal, organizational and presentation skills through both verbal and written communication with the ability to share knowledge and work effectively in a team environment in a professional manner with all levels of company staff including management and other departments as well as Company clients.
Ability to work independently and use personal computer, calculator, company automation system and proficiency in various software programs, including but not limited to Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat.
Other Requirements
- Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
- 10+ years of experience underwriting Inland Marine insurance business
- Must have the necessary Property & Casualty Producer’s License or willingness to obtain such license within company allocated timeframe from date of employment.
- CIS, CSR, AIS designation and/or completion of General Insurance Program and Associate degree in a business field or related business experience is preferred.
- Must be willing to travel monthly
Physical Requirements
Must be able to sit and work quietly for extended periods of time, operate a computer, and answer and communicate on a telephone.

Working Conditions
Business-casual fast paced multi-tasking office environment.
Hours of Operations
This position supports our marketing efforts internationally. This position's work hours are Monday through Friday 9am - 5pm, in a hybrid work environment. Our hybrid environment is 3 days within our business-casual office environment. Of these 3 days in the office, Wednesday and Thursday are required, and employees may work from home the other 2 days. Our employees choose their schedule.
This position requires occasional flexibility for working additional hours to accomplish project objectives.
