Job Description
As a Commercial Lines Underwriter, your role involves evaluating and deciding whether to accept, decline, or adjust commercial insurance risks for new policies, renewals, and endorsements, all while adhering to the company's underwriting philosophy.
This position offers a hybrid work arrangement, requiring three days in the Richmond, VA office and two days working from home each week.
What You'll Do- Evaluates and underwrites new Commercial Lines business submissions within designated authority, focusing on complete and lower-complexity accounts
- Utilizing average product knowledge in Commercial Lines, manages the renewal process including making decisions about loss recommendations, adjustments to pricing or deductibles, and non-renewals
- Reviews and decides on Commercial Lines endorsement requests, including reinstatement of cancellation notices for non-payment or underwriting reasons
- Reviews and submits Commercial Lines higher-level risks for decision‑making to Commercial Lines Lead and Senior Underwriters
- Responds to basic Claims Reports to Underwriting (CRU), and makes recommendations for any actions, if needed
- Communicates with marketing representatives, agency staff, and other insurance or inspection companies to gather information, provide quotes, or clarify underwriting policies
- Develops and maintains positive Company/Agency relations which may include agency travel and visitation, and attendance at various conventions/meetings (may include overnight stay)
- 2-5 years of experience with property/casualty underwriting
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Travel as required by business needs (estimated 10-20%)
