About

the Role

As a Personal Lines Underwriter Trainee, you will be responsible for determining the desirability and conditions for accepting new risks while monitoring our existing book of business in accordance with Company standards. Our Underwriters support our Marketing Department in the acquisition, service, and retention of prospects and policyholders.

Responsibilities of the Role
  • Reviews applications for insurance to determine desirability, proper coverage, classification, and attachment of proper forms.
  • Reviews all supplemental information received in connection with applications for insurance.
  • Examines change requests for approval.
  • Provides instructions for Operations Department to process changes or endorsements to policies.
  • Communicates decisions on desirability and coverage to Agent by memo or telephone. Decisions are sometimes adverse; must have good communication skills to keep climate between Company (Home Office) and Agent healthy. Must respect Agent and earn Agent's respect.
  • Processes "correspondence" concerning underwriting responsibilities received from Agents, policyholders, lienholders, and regulatory agencies. Correspondence is usually by letter or telephone, but may be in person.
  • Reviews claims activity as necessary for information developed that may affect desirability of coverage or rating.
  • Assists agents (usually by phone and email) with technical aspects of Sales to prospects or service to policyholder by interpreting manual and policy provisions.
  • Possesses thorough knowledge of Bureau and Company manuals.
  • Possesses thorough knowledge of Company guidelines and standards and ability to apply these guidelines to applications and policy changes.
  • Possesses good understanding of Company goals and objectives in providing insurance services to policyholder members.
  • Possesses thorough knowledge of the provisions of each policy for the line or lines of insurance underwritten and all applicable endorsements for each policy.
  • Maintains proper control of work flow for their underwriting territory and shares workload of others as need arises.
