About the Role

Equitable is looking for an experienced Sr. Employee Benefits Underwriter to join our team! The Sr. Employee Benefits Underwriter will be responsible for risk assessment and decision-making on new business opportunities. This individual will work closely with the Distribution team to sell new business and maintain existing business, keeping the Company’s financial objectives in mind.

The Underwriter will also collaborate with other departments and vendor partners with underwriting-related issues and applicable best practices.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Risk assessment and decision-making on new business opportunities.
  • Work closely with the Distribution team to sell new business and add to existing business, keeping the Company’s financial objectives in mind.
  • Collaborate with other departments and vendor partners with underwriting-related issues and applicable best practices.
  • Work within Equitable’s quoting platform and other rating tools to develop manual and experience rates.
  • Execute key KPIs, including pricing strategy targets, sales targets, persistency and TaT performance.

This position offers a flexible work schedule: it may be fully remote/hybrid. If you are located near one of our offices (e.g., Charlotte, NC; New York, NY), a hybrid schedule with 2–3 days on-site per week is expected to foster collaboration and connection.

The base salary range for this position is $73,000 - $105,000. Actual base salaries vary based on skills, experience, and geographical location. In addition to base pay, Equitable provides compensation to reward performance with base salary increases, spot bonuses, and short-term incentive compensation opportunities. Eligibility for these programs depends on level and functional area of responsibility.

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of Group Employee Benefits Underwriting experience. Experience with Life, STD, LTD, Dental, Vision, Accident, Critical Illness, Hospital Indemnity or VB products is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant hands on work experience
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Established Customer Service skills and experience
  • Proven ability to negotiate

  • Solid work ethic

Skills

Communicating Complex Concepts: Knowledge of effective presentation tools and techniques to ensure clear understanding; ability to use summarization and simplification techniques to explain complex technical concepts in simple, clear language appropriate to the audience.

Group Insurance: Knowledge of group insurance products, business processes, market segments and the marketplace; ability to run applications effectively for the insurance organization's business.

Insurance Legal and Regulatory Environment: Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations; ability to comply with these laws and regulations in insurance industry practices and activities.

Knowledge of Underwriting: Knowledge of the full spectrum of underwriting activities, practices, tools and considerations; ability to utilize underwriting knowledge to implement, manage and improve the underwriting process.

Managing Multiple Priorities: Knowledge of effective self-management practices; ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives, projects, groups, or activities, making effective judgments as to prioritizing and time allocation.
