Do you enjoy working in a fast-paced Remote Centered environment with variety in your work? The California Department of Insurance (CDI) is seeking a dynamic Casualty Actuary with experience performing reviews of pending rates, PPA class plans and rules.

Under the direction of the Supervising Casualty Actuary, the Casualty Actuary works on complex actuarial analysis projects. Specifically, the Casualty Actuary performs a variety of consultative and analytical assignments associated with aspects of Property and Casualty insurance rate regulation. In addition, the Casualty Actuary provides support for assignments requested by or in concert with the Commissioner and other Department branches, as required.

Conditions
  • The incumbent must be able to work in a high-rise building.
  • The incumbent may telework in accordance with CDI's Telework Policy. Teleworking employees may be required to report to their headquarters office location on designated telework days.
  • Travel expenses are not reimbursed, however other authorized transit subsidies do exist for those who qualify.
Minimum Requirements
  • ACTUARY
Responsibilities
  • Review pending rates, PPA class plans, and rules.
  • Conduct complex actuarial analysis projects for Property and Casualty rate regulation.
  • Provide support for assignments requested by or in concert with the Commissioner and other Department branches.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Actuarial Standards of Practice promulgated by the American Academy of Actuaries.
  • Experience in developing or reviewing rates for P/C lines of insurance while possessing an ACAS.
  • Effective written, verbal and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Excel.
  • Business acumen including understanding of how the insurance industry and the Department interact.
  • Knowledge of the California Insurance Code, California Code of Regulations and policies.
  • Experience with stochastic models and scoring catastrophe models for wildfire, fire following earthquake, earthquake, and flood.
  • Experience with predictive models such as GLMs, GAMs, decision trees, ensemble methods, boosting, random forests, neural networks, and other machine learning applications.
  • Experience with Access, R, SAS, VBA, SQL, Python, EMBLEM or other programming language or software.
  • Certified Specialist in Predictive Analytics (CSPA) designation from The CAS Institute.
  • Certified Specialist in Catastrophe Risk (CSCR) or Certified Catastrophe Risk Management Professional (CCRMP) designation from The CAS Institute.
