Disability Claims Specialist (Lincoln, NE)
Apply today to join NRECA’s Insurance & Financial Services team as a Disability Claims Specialist. In this role you’ll review, investigate, and analyze disability claim information for NRECA membership, ensuring consistent, compliant decisions while providing responsive customer service.
Responsibilities- Under general supervision review, investigate, and analyze disability claim information according to established policy, procedures, and service standards.
- Evaluate claims using standardized guidelines and escalation protocols, treating each case individually by researching claimant education, training, experience, functional limitations, and potential return‑to‑work opportunities.
- Develop recommended actions for assigned claims and maintain high customer‑service standards while meeting productivity and timeliness expectations.
- Apply judgment within defined parameters to support claim‑management approaches, escalating complex, disputed, or unusual cases to senior specialists or management.
- Maintain accurate documentation and reports on claim status and outcomes.
- Adhere to the hybrid work schedule, attending required in‑office days and working from home as permitted.
- Associate degree in business or a related field, or a minimum of 3 years of experience in disability or workers’ compensation claims processing with group insurance plans.
- Insurance coursework or designations (LOMA, AHIP, ICA, IFEBP) preferred.
- Three years of claims‑related experience covering disability, workers’ compensation, medical/dental, and/or life insurance.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the disability claims lifecycle, integrating medical evidence, vocational factors, functional limitations, and policy provisions to support consistent decisions.
- Strong analytical and critical‑thinking skills; sound decision‑making within established policies and authority levels.
- Clear, professional verbal and written communication; ability to engage diverse members and employees using approved messaging.
- Proficiency in identifying, investigating, and documenting issues accurately.
- Strong customer‑service skills, including active listening, needs assessment, and de‑escalation of challenging situations.
- Accountable attendance and adherence to the hybrid work schedule, reporting to the office when required.
8:15a.m. – 5:00p.m., Monday through Friday. Hybrid schedule: three on‑site days (Tuesdays and Thursdays mandatory, plus one additional day of your choice) and two days from home.
