Job Overview

Benefit Specialist Trainee – This entry‑level role focuses on learning to resolve claims and build the skills necessary to become an independent Benefit Specialist. The position is on‑site at Unum’s Portland, ME home office.

• Manage a caseload of complex claims, ensuring appropriate sign‑offs and timely claims decisions.
• Apply contract/policy knowledge to analyze eligibility, liability, and appropriate payment for claims.
• Develop understanding of Unum products, policies, procedures, and relevant contract provisions.
• Perform claim investigations, identify resources, and develop strategies for return‑to‑work opportunities.
• Create objective, clear documentation and technical rationale for all determinations.
• Utilize the Claim Management System and coordinate with other products as needed.
• Provide excellent customer service by paying claims promptly and responding to inquiries.
• Maintain service and quality standards and protect the company against extra‑contractual liabilities.
• Participate in ongoing learning, mentorship, and continuous improvement initiatives.

• College degree preferred or equivalent experience.
• Excellent customer service and decision‑making skills.
• Problem‑solving experience and ability to evaluate claim information objectively.
• Detail oriented and able to analyze complex contractual information.
• Confident in making fair decisions and flexible to new information.
• Strong sense of urgency and integrity in balanced claim decisions.
• Ability to influence others to constructive conclusions.
• Proficient PC skills and navigation of image‑based systems.
• Strong analytical, mathematical, and multitasking abilities.
• Excellent verbal, written, and listening communication skills.
• Proven teamwork and collaboration in a complex environment.
