We are currently hiring for a detail-oriented and analytically driven Actuarial Consultant. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working closely with underwriters and actuaries to develop pricing models, analyze risk trends, and support data-driven decision-making.
This is a hybrid role with 3 days a week in Unionville, CT, designed for individuals who thrive in a collaborative, in-person environment.
In this position you will work closely with the Y-Risk underwriting team developing the pricing for new and renewal business across all lines including Commercial General Liability, Commercial Auto, and Inland Marine. You will be an active participant in daily underwriting meetings evaluating opportunities and participating in underwriting/pricing decisions.
In addition, you will be involved with monthly and quarterly results monitoring including developing claim count expectations for larger accounts and providing projections for actual vs expected monitoring. You will gain an in-depth understanding of Y‑Risk, the markets it serves, and the various pricing approaches. This position provides opportunity to work on new initiatives such as the Connected Customer, working with our data engineer on automated data reporting, automated audit calculations, and data visualization around exposure information and actual vs expected tracking.
Responsibilities- Partner with underwriters to develop and refine pricing models for specialty insurance products.
- Provide pricing support with other actuaries, including updating and maintaining pricing models/tools.
- Work with the data engineer on monthly reporting of audit data and assist account managers in establishing audit worksheets for smooth processing of monthly audit premiums.
- Actively participate in the daily Diamond Table underwriting meetings.
- Develop innovative and novel solutions for new account opportunities, look for opportunities to further automate and revamp pricing processes, and explore other data sources to supplement pricing analysis.
- Assist with larger accounts that rely on The Hartford’s large account pricing tools and collaborate with the data science team to explore additional pricing insights.
- Work with underwriting on developing pricing for product expansion.
- Support annual reinsurance renewal submission.
- Participate in quarterly results analysis.
- Potentially work with underwriting and pricing of new emerging risks and technologies, creating innovative approaches to evaluating and pricing opportunities.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- 1‑3 years of prior P&C actuarial analyst experience preferred.
- Sound decision‑making and analytical skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in conveying technical results and influencing decisions.
- Attention to detail and ability to manage rapidly changing priorities.
- Programming experience in R and/or Python a plus, but not required.
- Predictive modeling/data science experience a plus but not required.
- Demonstrates leadership qualities, entrepreneurial spirit, and is achievement oriented.
- Intellectual curiosity with ability to develop creative problem‑solving acumen and potential to build an innovative mindset.
- Sound time management skills with the ability to adapt to dynamic workflow.
- Computer savvy – experience with MS Office suite.
This role will have a hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in Unionville, CT office three days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Qualified candidates who do not live near an office may be considered for a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise. Candidates with hybrid reporting to the Unionville, CT office are highly preferred.
Candidates must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I‑983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.
CompensationThe listed annualized base pay range is $70,960 – $106,440. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short‑term or annual bonuses, long‑term incentives, and on‑the‑spot recognition.
