Job OverviewTitle: Group Life/Disability Underwriter Location: Remote, United States (eligible for hybrid if within 50 miles of Aflac offices in Columbus, GA or Columbia, SC)
Division: PLADS Job : 9457 Salary Range: $90,000 – $120,000 Posting End Date: July 15, 2026
- If you live within 50 miles of the Aflac offices located in Columbus, GA or Columbia, SC, this role will be hybrid. You will be expected to work in the office for at least 60% of the work week and from home for the remaining portion of the week.
- If you live more than 50 miles from these offices, this role will be remote. You will work from home, within the continental US. Occasional office visits may be requested in advance.

- Extensive knowledge of changes to policies, procedures, and governance tools.
- Solid Group Life/Disability underwriting knowledge.
- Understanding of Group Life and Disability products, affiliated systems, and applicable operational policies.
- Strong math skills.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
- Knowledge of experience rating Life, STD, LTD, Leave products and competitor experience data analysis.
- Bachelor's Degree in a related field.
- 4 years of financial underwriting experience with Group Life, STD, LTD, and Leave products for employer groups exceeding 1,000 covered lives, or 5 years of financial underwriting experience with Group Life, STD, LTD, and Leave products (including 2 years for groups over 1,000 covered lives).
- Equivalency: an alternate combination of education and experience may be considered.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Completes assignments of high complexity within delegated authority.
- Provides technical underwriting support and guidance to customers and distributors, delivering excellent customer service.
- Maintains distributor relationships by requesting necessary evidence, making correct decisions, and explaining rating decisions.
- Processes queries and referrals within authority limits, measuring exposure and risk to maintain underwriting standards.
- Contributes to the development and improvement of technical underwriting standards, controls, practices, and procedures.
- Proposes ideas and solutions for new or enhanced propositions, ensuring appropriate premium pricing.
- Supports professional development for self and others, fostering a positive team culture.
- Identifies training opportunities and assists with training as directed.
- Collaborates with distributors and other operational areas to support overall business plan achievement, demonstrating underwriting expertise.
- Assists with quality reviews to identify, assess, and mitigate risks in underwriting goals and objectives.
- Investigates and inspects data, processes, and practices to identify potential or actual compliance issues and recommend actions.
- Collates and analyses data to support underwriting decision‑making.
- Evaluates underwriting processes, tracks improvements, and monitors implementation impact.
- Acts as lead technical resource for standard methodologies and system knowledge.
- Interprets information and advises internal clients on procedural and regulatory actions.
- Performs other duties as required.
The salary range for this job is $90,000 – $120,000. The range considers factors such as education, experience, licensure, certifications, geographic location, and peer compensation. This range is specific to the role; it does not include potential incentive pay or benefits.
