Medical Director; Remote
Position Summary
Medical Senior Consultant – a role that integrates evidence‑based medical knowledge with insurance principles to assess mortality and morbidity risk, influence underwriting decisions, evaluate claims, and shape forward‑looking risk management strategies. The position is full‑remote at 0.8–1.0
FTE (32–40hours/week) with biannual travel to the St.Paul, MN office.
- Identify medical information relevant for claims and underwriting reviews.
- Provide advanced medical knowledge and training for underwriters and claims examiners.
- Make underwriting and claims decisions based on current medical guidelines.
- Incorporate new medical knowledge into guideline updates and enhancements, including advanced ECG interpretation.
- Stay current with medical literature and develop subjects of special interest.
- Identify relevant medical topics, advances, and emerging risks, and provide concise updates for stakeholders.
- Develop business acumen, proactively identify medical and underwriting opportunities and trends, and contribute to fair risk assessment initiatives.
- Teach underwriters on medical topics and engage them through case discussions.
- Be visibly involved in the insurance medicine community and complete AAIM Diplomate Board of Insurance Medicine (DBIM) certification.
- MD or DO with 5+years clinical experience.
- Proven ability to communicate clearly, respectfully, and effectively across disciplines, including underwriting, legal, and business teams.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team‑based environment, valuing diverse expertise and perspectives while maintaining professionalism and mutual respect.
- 5+years experience in insurance medicine.
- Board of Insurance Medicine candidate and/or working toward DBIM certification.
- Experience with life insurance.
- Intellectual curiosity, continuous learning, and innovative problem‑solving.
- Experience leveraging artificial intelligence tools to enhance operational efficiency and strategic decision‑making, and a commitment to responsible AI integration.
