Summary:

As a Field Consultant, we’ll count on you to promote and provide exemplary customer service.

Responsibilities
  • Analyze, review and adjust commercial casualty claims, most of which are of a serious and complex nature.
  • Investigate and evaluate property damage and negotiation resolutions.
  • Handle lawsuit files and oversee defense counsel activities.
  • Dispo se of claims according to prescribed authority.
  • Provide advice, counsel and training to Claims representatives.
Key Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the most serious and complex commercial bodily injury and/or property damage claims.
  • Make decisions within maximum authorization; recommend settlement values in the disposition of serious and complex claims.
  • Adhere to high standards of professional conduct while delivering superior claims service.
  • Plan and meet deadlines to promptly apply best claims practices to resolve all assigned cases in accordance with company guidelines.
  • Use various methods of settlement in cases where warranted.
  • Assign cases to outside vendors as warranted.
  • Provide reserve analysis to ensure timely and accurate case reserves in accordance with best claims practices.
  • Maintain current knowledge of assigned insurance lines, court decisions, guidelines, and changes in policy; attend seminars or training as needed.
  • Provide advice, counsel and training to Claims representatives of all levels; provide specialized training and consultation to non-claims areas as requested.
  • Create and analyze severe incident reports, reinsurance reports and other information for home office, claims management and underwriting.
  • Oversee defense counsel in all lawsuit activities throughout the life of the claim.
  • Deliver a positive customer service experience to all internal, external, current and prospective Nationwide customers.
  • May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Education:

    Undergraduate degree or post-graduate studies preferred.
  • License/Certification/Designation:
    State licensing where required; successful completion of required/applicable claims certification training/classes.
  • Experience:

    Eight years commercial casualty claims handling experience preferred.
  • Knowledge, Abilities and

    Skills:

    Superior knowledge of best claims practices for severe and complex bodily injury and property claims; knowledge of insurance contracts, medical terminology and legal aspects; ability to operate claims systems and related software; proven ability to meet customer needs and provide exemplary service; analytical skills for independent decision-making and conflict resolution; ability to coordinate with defense counsel; strong written and verbal communication;

    organizational skills to establish work priorities; ability to operate personal computer and related software; willingness to engage in training and leadership as needed.
Job Conditions
  • Overtime Eligibility:
    Exempt (Not Eligible).
  • Working Conditions:

    Normal office or field claims environment; may require travel, sitting for extended periods, driving, and physical inspections of accident scenes and property loss sites; ability to work outside in all weather; may require irregular hours and CAT (catastrophe) assignments; on-call availability.
  • ADA:
    Principal functions may vary by assignment.
