- 10+ years of life underwriting experience.
- FALU, CLU, FLMI, and EKG certification preferred.
- Strong financial acumen and advanced risk assessment skills.

This role is fully remote. This role does not qualify for employer-sponsored work authorization. Nationwide does not participate in the Stem OPT Extension program.
Key Responsibilities- Receive, evaluate, and underwrite complex life‑insurance applications up to the maximum handling limit as approved by the Chief Underwriter.
- Protect confidentiality of documentation and information acquired throughout the underwriting process.
- Work within broad limits and authority, with minimal oversight, on highly sophisticated assignments requiring niche knowledge.
- Maintain in‑depth knowledge of manuals, underwriting materials, rules, regulations, procedures, medical factors, and practices impacting mortality and morbidity underwriting.
- Maintain solid understanding of all underwriting administrative systems and provide outstanding service to all internal and external customers.
- Evaluate and assess applications requiring additional evidence of insurability; determine the need for and authorize ordering of underwriting requirements such as medical examinations, blood profiles, home office specimens, attending physician reports, inspection reports, client direct interviews, and other essential information.
- Develop a strong understanding of accelerated underwriting process and apply risk‑based decision‑making skills.
- Consult with other underwriters, accept referred cases, and suggest innovative solutions.
- Supervise handling of unusual or complicated cases.
- Evaluate, appraise and quantify data derived from personal or business financial information and establish insurable interest.
- Handle the most complex financial underwriting applications and often assist others through referrals and training.
- Reach terms on, coordinate, and negotiate both automatic and facultative reinsurance on highly complex reinsurance situations.
- Work on special projects as assigned, including project plans, requirements, timelines, etc.
- Meet and present with field partners as needed; acquire input and feedback.
- Determine eligibility for temporary insurance and authorize disbursement of policy refunds if not eligible.
- Interpret electrocardiogram tracings received as evidence for life insurance applications.
- Consult with Medical Director as needed for cases requiring physician input.
- Consult with Chief Underwriter, Staff Underwriting, Senior Underwriting Consultants, and the Medical Director as needed.
