Overview
Property Contents, Field Claims Specialist – work-from-home position focused on investigation and evaluation of moderate to severe losses with emphasis on contents. You will meet with customers or their representatives to complete an inventory of damaged contents and establish pricing, and work with vendors on cleaning, restoring and replacing damaged contents. Location options:
Des Moines, IA (preferred) or Western US (WA, OR, CA, NV, , MT, AZ, UT, WY, OK, KS, NE, SD, ND, MN, IA, MO, IL, WI). This is a claims role with Nationwide’s Property and Casualty team.
- Handle all assigned claims promptly and effectively with minimal direction.
- Make decisions within delegated authority per company policies and procedures.
- Determine proper policy coverages and apply claims practices to resolve cases per guidelines.
- Open, close and adjust reserves to ensure reserve adequacy.
- Adhere to file conferencing notification and authority procedures.
- Maintain current knowledge of insurance products, guidelines, and policy changes; attend seminars/trainings as needed.
- Maintain knowledge of local industry repair procedures and market pricing.
- Submit severe incident reports, reinsurance reports, and other information to claims management as needed.
- Collaborate with Special Investigation Unit and Subrogation to identify fraud and subrogation opportunities.
- Assist or prepare files for lawsuit, trial or subrogation as applicable.
- Deliver outstanding customer service to internal and external Nationwide customers.
- Mentor less experienced claims associates and assist with training/presentations as assigned.
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
- Education:
Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience. State licensing where required; completion of applicable claims certification training/classes. - Experience:
Three to five years of related property claims experience; customer service environment experience (flexible work schedules and extended hours preferred). - Knowledge, Abilities and
Skills:- General knowledge of insurance theory and practices, contracts, and their application.
- Property estimating and automated claims systems.
- Investigation, discussion and settlement activities for extensive property damage claims.
- Ability to guide customers through the claims process and provide positive service.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to apply coverages, laws, and policy exclusions/exceptions.
- Ability to establish repair requirements and cost estimates; evaluate and resolve property claims.
- Strong written and verbal communication; able to interact with policyholders, claimants, repairers, attorneys, agents and the public.
- Organizational skills and proficiency with personal computers and claims software.

Additional Information- Job Conditions:
Overtime eligible as exempt; normal office environment; some travel and CAT assignment requirements; valid driver’s license with satisfactory driving record. - Credit/Background Check:
