The Opportunity

The purpose of this role is to lead the strategic development, underwriting, and portfolio management of the North America Accident and Health Treaty business to achieve sustainable, profitable growth in alignment with the business plan. The role is accountable for the overall profitability and performance of the portfolio, including new business production, renewal retention, cycle management, and optimization of underwriting results.

It provides leadership in underwriting strategy, pricing, product development, and portfolio management, while ensuring compliance with legal, regulatory, and governance requirements. The role also leads and develops the A&H underwriting team, strengthens broker and client relationships, refines operational processes to support business objectives, and applies expert judgment to underwrite complex treaty opportunities that contribute to a diverse and profitable portfolio and the successful delivery of the designated business line's P&L.

Responsibilities
  • Communicate direction of underwriting business plan to team in order to achieve delivery of business objectives
  • Manage resource, motivate, develop and focus the team(s) to maintain required standards of performance and engagement
  • Establish and strengthen strong relationships with key stakeholders internally and externally, including cedants and brokers
  • Underwrite and delegate the Underwriting of Reinsurance risks to meet business objectives including:
    Negotiating rates, terms, and conditions for existing and new business
  • Managing production and issue of contract certainty documentation
  • Ensuring compliance with internal and external regulations and guidelines
  • Deliver on an annual business plan for the underwriting business area
  • Monitor and report on progress
  • Keep abreast of market dynamics and demonstrate market cycle awareness to be able to operate effectively
  • Communicate risk appetites to underwriting teams, in accordance with the business plan
  • Establish clear accountabilities and authority levels for direct reports and build a strong culture of performance and accountability to ensure delivery of goals
Work Experience

Necessary Work Experience includes:

  • Significant relevant reinsurance experience.
  • Experience leading teams.
Qualifications

Necessary Qualifications include:

  • Tertiary Degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Experience
  • 10 years relevant experience in Accident and Health insurance/reinsurance
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel, Power Point, Word, and other Microsoft Office products
  • Experience developing strategic underwriting framework
  • Experience managing, developing, or leading others
  • Increasing levels of responsibility
  • Progression toward or receipt of professional designations including CPCU, ARe, RPLU, or any actuarial exams.
Compensation Package

The salary range for this role is provided above. This is the national range for location(s) listed. The salary offer will be decided based on the role's complexity, its location, and the candidate’s professional background, including their education and experience. Beyond the base salary, regular full-time and part-time employees will also be eligible for QBE’s annual discretionary bonus plan based on business and individual performance.
