Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies, Workers Compensation Division, has an opening in our San Diego office for a Claims Manager to provide strategic and operational leadership for multiple indemnity claim units through direct management and development of Claim Supervisors. This individual will be accountable for achieving organizational objectives related to claim quality, customer experience, financial performance, regulatory compliance, and employee engagement. The Claims Manager establishes and executes claim handling strategies, leverages data and technology to drive performance, ensures adherence to legal and company standards, and fosters a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and professional development.

  • Direct, lead, and develop indemnity claim teams through effective management of Claim Supervisors, ensuring alignment with organizational goals, priorities, and performance expectations.
  • Ensure claims are administered in compliance with applicable statutes, regulations, case law, and company standards, while achieving strong results in internal and external claim audits.
  • Monitor operational and individual performance metrics, implementing strategies and corrective actions to improve claim quality, productivity, customer satisfaction, and claim outcomes.
  • Provide oversight and guidance on complex, high-exposure, litigated, and strategically significant claims, ensuring sound claim resolution strategies and appropriate risk management practices.
  • Promote and safeguard the financial integrity of claim files through timely and accurate reserving, settlement authority oversight, and effective claim cost containment practices.
  • Utilize data analytics, reporting tools, and emerging technologies to identify trends, measure performance, mitigate risk, and drive operational improvements.
  • Ensure timely implementation and consistent execution of changes in laws, regulations, industry best practices, and company claim management strategies.
  • Develop, coach, and mentor Claim Supervisors, fostering professional growth, leadership effectiveness, employee engagement, succession planning, and accountability for results.
  • Partner with stakeholders across Claims, Underwriting, Legal, Finance, Human Resources, and other departments to achieve business objectives and deliver integrated solutions.
  • Lead or participate in strategic initiatives, process improvements, organizational objectives, training programs, and cross-functional projects that support operational excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Manage escalated customer concerns, complaints, and service issues, ensuring timely resolution and preservation of key business relationships.
  • Represent the organization in client meetings, claim reviews, audits, and other business forums, reinforcing the company's commitment to exceptional service and claim outcomes.
  • Establish and communicate clear expectations, monitor results, and hold leaders accountable for performance, compliance, service standards, and professional conduct.
  • Foster a culture of inclusion, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement that supports employee development and organizational success.
Education, Certifications, and Experience
  • EDUCATION:

    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; or minimum 8 years relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and technical training combined.
  • CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES:
    Designated for California adjusting or ability to achieve within 9 months from placement into position.
  • EXPERIENCE:

    A minimum of 8 years of work experience in workers compensation insurance claims adjusting, claims operations, or a closely related function, with a minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of workers compensation regulatory requirements and best practices.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office/365 applications and able to quickly demonstrate mastery of proprietary and vendor software programs.
  • Able to effectively analyze data from various sources and identify issues and trends.
