Nationwide Financial is seeking a Senior Actuarial Consultant, to join the Valuation team supporting our growing Group Benefits business. This role focuses primarily on Group Health and Employer Stop Loss valuation, with the opportunity to influence how actuarial insights support business strategy, financial reporting, and continued growth.
The position will analyze claims data, establish reserves, and communicate actuarial conclusions to business leaders and cross-functional partners. The portfolio includes traditional Stop Loss, level-funded Stop Loss, captive Stop Loss, and other Accident & Health and Life products.
What you’ll do- Perform monthly and quarterly claims analysis, loss valuation, and reserve calculations.
- Construct, maintain, and enhance actuarial projection, valuation, and financial reporting models.
- Support statutory valuation activities, as well as reinsurance analysis and pricing.
- Analyze complex data sets and product calculations to identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
- Develop clear recommendations and communicate technical concepts—including reserving actions—to business leaders and other stakeholders.
- Lead or contribute to cross-functional peer reviews that strengthen quality, collaboration, and innovation.
- Build relationships with Reserving, Finance, IT, Underwriting, Reinsurance, and business teams.
- Support onboarding and training for new associates and help develop practical training materials.

You’ll be part of a collaborative actuarial environment where strong actuarial judgment is valued—not only for technical analysis, but also for helping leaders understand the performance and direction of the business.
Preferred Skills and Experiences- Previous Employer Stop Loss or Group Health valuation experience is preferred, but not required.
- Approximately five to seven years of actuarial experience.
- An ASA or comparable Associate-level actuarial credential; candidates progressing toward FSA are encouraged to apply.
- Experience in actuarial valuation and loss reserving, financial reporting, or related insurance analytics.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and comfort working with Excel-based actuarial models.
- The ability to explain complex actuarial concepts clearly to technical and nontechnical audiences.
- A collaborative, self-directed approach and the ability to make sound decisions in an evolving business environment.
- We will also consider strong actuarial professionals with transferable valuation or reserving experience in other insurance product areas.
- Experience with Power BI or similar data visualization tools is a plus.
- Candidates who want to continue their actuarial development may participate in Nationwide’s Actuarial Development Program.
