Under the general direction of the Interpreting Supervisor, we are seeking a Court Interpreter who is highly motivated, organized, and detail oriented. The selected candidate must be bilingual in English and Spanish and able to interpret in sight, consecutive, and simultaneous modes for court proceedings, quasi‑judicial hearings, complementary dispute resolution events, and other court‑related events either in person, virtually, or via a telecommunications device.
SalarySalary range for this position is $74,454.81 to $ for Schedule A, and $74,454.81 to $ for Schedule B. For newly hired individuals the starting salary will normally be at the minimum of the salary range.
Remote WorkThe Judiciary offers a hybrid work schedule. This position may qualify for up to two days of remote work outside of Judiciary buildings. Regular and predictable physical presence at the worksite is an essential function of this role.
Position Levels• Court Interpreter 1 – Journey Level 2:
Interpret legal proceedings and translate documents. Minimum Salary: $74,454.81, Maximum Salary: $.
• Court Interpreter 2 – Mastery Level 3:
Interpret complex legal proceedings. Minimum Salary: $78,922.07, Maximum Salary: $.
- Interpret court events in simultaneous, consecutive, and sight modes, whether on site, telephonically, or virtually.
- Translate signage and vicinage documents as requested.
- Assist with the contracting of freelance interpreters and process related vouchers, statistical reports, TIVD, ADA accommodations, and other tasks requested by the supervisor.
- Produce translations of signage and other documents, either in draft or final form, as directed by the supervisor.
- Collect and enter data in the automated record‑keeping system.
- Provide training to staff as needed.
- Participate in study and training events to develop and maintain interpreting and translation skills.
- Maintain excellent time‑management and interpersonal skills, working effectively with all levels of Judiciary staff.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
- Ability to interpret in sight, consecutive, and simultaneous modes.
- Familiarity with courtroom protocols and adherence to the highest ethical standards.
- Eligibility must include being a court interpreter approved by the New Jersey Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC). Eligible interpreters have passed the written and performance oral exams administered by the AOC or an equivalent test.
• Driver's license: required only if operating a vehicle is necessary to perform essential duties.
• Authorization to work: U.S. citizenship is not required; the selected candidate must be authorized to work in the United States by Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations.
• Background check: a thorough background check that includes fingerprinting. All data received will be kept in strict confidence except to inform the individual of the findings and the action taken.
• Residency: newly hired employees must establish and maintain a principal residence in New Jersey within one year of hire.
