Position Overview

The Garifuna Telephone Interpreter is responsible for handling calls on demand and rendering the meaning of conversations between Garifuna and English speakers across multiple industries.

Essential Job Functions
  • Respond to interpreting sessions promptly and conduct interpretation in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Render correct concepts and meanings according to established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.
  • Speak clearly in both languages using proper pronunciation, enunciation and polite expressions.
  • Maintain a professional and calm demeanor throughout sessions, even during emergency situations such as 911 calls.
  • Maintain punctuality and availability during work hours.
  • Follow client instructions in compliance with protocol, ensuring client expectations are met with the Limited English‑speaking Person (LEP) and avoiding interaction with the LEP without the client’s permission.
  • Understand protocol and terminology for various industries including, but not limited to, Medical, Insurance, Finance and Law.
  • Demonstrate commitment to cultural sensitivity and diversity.
  • Be capable of handling highly emotional or stressful calls, remaining on calls for extended periods if required by the nature of the call or high call volume.
Qualifications
  • Fluency in Garifuna and English, with cultural competency to navigate regional and accent differences.
  • Excellent listening, retention, and note‑taking skills to maintain high accuracy during interpretation.
  • Ability to concentrate, stay detached, remain neutral and objective, even when dealing with sensitive subjects such as end‑of‑life discussions, pregnancy termination, vaccinations, or matters concerning sexual orientation and/or gender expression.
  • Education or work experience in language‑related fields such as teaching, language assessment, translation or interpretation (preferred).
  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without requiring future visa sponsorship.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to read and write in the requested languages (highly preferred).
  • Readiness to adapt to any Language Line Solutions technology enhancements to improve service delivery and meet client demands.
Technical Requirements
  • Dedicated personal device for business purposes.
  • Desktop or laptop computer with Windows, MacOS, or Chrome

    OS.
  • Tablets (iPadOS or Android) and smartphones (iOS or Android) are acceptable.
  • Prohibited brands:
    Kaspersky products, Huawei hardware.
  • High‑speed internet connection: download ≥5

    Mbps, upload ≥3

    Mbps, ping ≤300ms, jitter ≤30ms.
  • Access to a quiet space free from background noise or distraction.
Physical Requirements
  • Operate keyboard and mouse and remain stationary in front of a computer for most of the workday.
  • Operate company software and systems for all job functions.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity to type or write.
  • Able to lift up to 26lbs.
  • May be exposed to moderate noise levels (computer, audio, telephone).
