Position Overview

Romani Telephone Interpreter –
Independent Contractor –Pay: $1.25 – $1.40 per minute. Work from home in the United States.

Key Responsibilities
  • Respond to interpreting sessions promptly and conduct interpretation in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Render correct concepts and meanings according to the conventions of established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.
  • Speak clearly in both Romani and English using proper pronunciation, enunciation and polite expressions.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor throughout all interpreting sessions.
  • Remain calm during sessions, especially if a primary speaker is incoherent or upset, and during emergency situations such as 911 calls.
  • Maintain punctuality and availability during the assigned work hours.
  • Follow client instructions in compliance with protocol, ensuring the client’s expectations are met with the Limited English‑speaking Person (LEP) and avoiding interaction with the LEP without client permission.
  • Understand protocol and terminology for various industries, including medical, insurance, finance, and law.
  • Demonstrate commitment to cultural sensitivity and to working in a diverse environment.
  • Handle calls that may be highly emotional or stressful, remaining on the call for extended periods without breaks due to volume or nature of the call.
Qualifications
  • Fluency in Romani and English and skill in the associated cultural dynamics.
  • Ability to provide cultural competency and assess regional and accent differences to facilitate communication with the LEP.
  • Excellent listening, retention, and note‑taking skills to maintain a high level of accuracy during interpretation.
  • Ability to concentrate, remain detached from the conversation, neutral, and objective at all times while handling sensitive subjects such as end‑of‑life conversations, pregnancy termination, vaccinations, and matters concerning sexual orientation or gender expression.
  • Education or work experience in language‑related fields such as teaching, language assessment, translation or interpretation preferred.
  • Must be able to adapt to any LLS technology enhancements that improve service delivery and meet client demands.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States with no requirement for future visa sponsorship.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Applicants currently employed by a Language Line client or an affiliated Language Line business may not be eligible for consideration.
  • Ability to read and write in the requested languages is highly preferred.
Technical Requirements
  • Dedicated personal device for business purposes (desktop or laptop). Acceptable operating systems:
    Windows, macOS, or Chrome

    OS.
  • Tablets (iPadOS or Android) and smartphones (iOS or Android) are also acceptable.
  • Restricted hardware or software:
    Kaspersky products, Huawei hardware.
  • High‑speed Internet connection with at least 5

    Mbps download, 3

    Mbps upload, ping no more than 300ms, and jitter no more than 30ms.
  • Quiet workspace free from background noise or distraction.
Physical Requirements
  • Operate keyboard and mouse and remain seated in front of a computer for the majority of the day.
  • Operate company‑provided software and systems to perform all duties.
  • Require sufficient manual dexterity to type or write.
  • Ability to lift up to 26lbs.
  • May be exposed to moderate noise levels from computer, audio, or telephone equipment.
