Afar Interpreter (Phone Interpreter)

Remote (Work from Home), United States. Status:
Independent Contractor.

Pay: $0.75 - $0.90 per minute.

The Afar Telephone Interpreter interprets spoken conversation between Afar and English speakers on demand for a variety of industries, including healthcare, government, insurance, finance, utilities, travel & hospitality, general business, law enforcement, court, and 911. The interpreter works from a quiet, secure home environment and follows established interpretation protocol, ensuring confidentiality and cultural sensitivity.

• Respond promptly to interpreting sessions and conduct interpretation in a friendly and professional manner.
• Render correct concepts and meanings according to established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.
• Speak clearly in both languages with proper pronunciation, enunciation and polite expressions.
• Maintain a professional demeanor throughout sessions and remain calm during challenging or emergency situations.
• Ensure punctuality and availability during work hours; remain on calls as required by client instructions.
• Understand and use industry terminology for medical, insurance, finance, and law, and follow protocol for sensitive subjects.
• Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and ability to work in a diverse environment.
• Remain neutral, objective, and detached during conversations involving sensitive topics such as end‑of‑life, pregnancy termination, vaccinations, and matters related to sexual orientation or gender expression.
• Adapt to technology enhancements and meet client expectations with high call volumes or extended call durations.

• Fluency in Afar and English; strong cultural competency and ability to assess regional and accent differences.
• Excellent listening, retention and note‑taking skills; ability to maintain high level of accuracy and concentrate on calls.
• Education or work experience in language‑related fields such as teaching, language assessment, translation or interpretation is preferred.
• At least 18 years of age, legally authorized to work in the United States, without needing future visa sponsorship.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to read and write the requested languages is highly preferred.
• Willingness to complete a pre‑employment background check and drug screen (post‑offer).

• Dedicated personal device for business purposes: desktop/laptop (Windows, macOS, or Chrome

• High‑speed internet connection: ≥5

• Quiet space free from background noise or distraction; access to a keyboard and mouse.
• Ability to operate company‑provided software and systems.
• No use of Kaspersky products or Huawei hardware.

• Operate keyboard and mouse; remain seated in front of a computer for the majority of the workday.
• Type or write with sufficient manual dexterity.
• May lift up to 26lb; exposed to moderate noise levels (computer, audio, telephone).
