Position Overview
The Quechua Telephone Interpreter will handle on‑demand calls, translating between Quechua and English speakers across a wide range of industries including healthcare, government, insurance, finance, utilities, travel & hospitality, general business, law enforcement, court, and 911. The role requires quick information processing, concise communication, cultural sensitivity, and a professional demeanor. This independent contractor position is remote and requires a quiet, secure home office.
EssentialJob Functions
- Respond promptly to interpreting sessions and conduct interpretation in a friendly and professional manner.
- Render correct concepts and meanings according to established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.
- Speak clearly in both languages using proper pronunciation, enunciation, and polite expressions.
- Maintain a professional demeanor throughout all interpreting sessions.
- Remain calm during sessions, even if a primary speaker is incoherent, upset, or in emergency situations such as 911 calls.
- Maintain punctuality and availability during agreed work hours.
- Follow client instructions and comply with protocol to meet client expectations, ensuring no interaction with the LEP without client permission.
- Understand industry‑specific protocol and terminology (e.g., medical, insurance, finance, law).
- Demonstrate commitment to cultural sensitivity and diversity.
- Handle emotionally charged or stressful calls and remain on a call for extended periods without breaks if required.
- Fluency in Quechua and English, including cultural dynamics of both languages.
- Ability to provide cultural competency and assess regional and accent variations.
- Excellent listening, retention, and note‑taking skills to maintain high accuracy.
- Ability to concentrate, remain detached, neutral, and objective at all times, especially during sensitive subjects such as end‑of‑life, abortion, vaccinations, and LGBTQ+ matters.
- Education or work experience in language‑related fields (teaching, translation, interpretation) preferred but not required.
- Minimum age 18 years; legally authorized to work in the United States without future visa sponsorship.
- High school diploma or equivalent. Ability to read and write in both languages is highly preferred.
- Readiness to adapt to any Language Line technology enhancements that improve service delivery.
Applicants must be able to provide a post‑offer background check and/or drug screen based on location. Must not currently be employed by a client of Language Line or an affiliated business.
Technical Requirements- Dedicated personal device for business (desktop or laptop with Windows, macOS, or Chrome
OS; tablet or smartphone acceptable). - High‑speed internet connection providing at least 5
Mbps download, 3
Mbps upload, ping no greater than 300ms, and jitter no greater than 30ms. - Quiet, distraction‑free space for calls.
- Operate keyboard and mouse, remain stationary at a computer for most of the day.
- Type or write with sufficient manual dexterity.
- Lift up to 26lbs as needed.
Independent contractor. Pay $1.25 to $1.40 per minute. Not eligible for employee benefits, but employee referral program and advancement opportunities are available.
