Position Overview

The Nuer Telephone Interpreter handles calls on demand, rendering meaning between Nuer and English speakers across various industries. The role requires prompt response, professional demeanor, and accurate interpretation according to industry protocols.

Essential Job Functions
  • Respond to interpretation sessions promptly and conduct interpretation in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Render correct concepts and meanings following established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.
  • Speak clearly in both languages, with proper pronunciation, enunciation, and polite expressions.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor throughout sessions.
  • Remain calm during sessions, especially in emergency situations such as 911 calls.
  • Maintain punctuality and availability during work hours.
  • Follow client instructions in compliance with protocol, ensuring client expectations met with the LEP.
  • Understand protocol and terminology for various industries, including medical, insurance, finance, and law.
  • Demonstrate commitment to cultural sensitivity and diversity.
  • Remain on calls that involve sensitive subjects such as end‑of‑life conversations or topics concerning sexual orientation and gender expression, as required.
  • Provide required company standards of service in dynamic environments with high call volumes or emotional calls.
Qualifications
  • Fluency in Nuer and English, with cultural competence and awareness of regional accents.
  • Excellent listening, retention, and note‑taking skills.
  • Ability to concentrate, remain detached, neutral, and objective during sensitive conversations.
  • Preferred education or experience in language‑related fields such as teaching, language assessment, translation, or interpretation.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring visa sponsorship.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to read and write the requested languages is highly preferred.
Technical Requirements
  • Dedicated personal device for business purposes (desktop/laptop, tablet, or smartphone).
  • Operating system:
    Windows, macOS, or Chrome

    OS (desktops/laptops); iPadOS, Android for tablets; iOS, Android for smartphones.
  • Internet connection:
    Download ≥ 5

    Mbps, upload ≥ 3

    Mbps, ping ≤ 300ms, jitter ≤ 30ms.
  • Qualify for a quiet space free from background noise or distraction.
Physical Requirements
  • Operate keyboard and mouse, remain in a stationary position in front of a computer during majority of the workday.
  • Operate company software and systems.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to type or write.
  • Able to lift up to 26lbs.
  • May be exposed to moderate noise levels (computer, audio, telephone).
