Phone Interpreter – Independent Contractor - Pay: $1.25 - $1.40 per minute
The Kanjobal Telephone Interpreter is responsible for handling calls on demand and rendering the meaning of conversations between Kanjobal and English speakers.
Some calls may be highly emotional and/or stressful in nature. The interpreter works from a quiet and secure home office environment. The interpreter may be required to remain on calls for extended periods due to high call volumes or emergency situations.
- Respond promptly to interpreting sessions and conduct interpretation in a friendly and professional manner.
- Render correct concepts and meanings according to established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.
- Speak clearly in both languages using proper pronunciation, enunciation, and polite expressions.
- Maintain a professional demeanor and remain calm during sessions, even if a primary speaker is incoherent or upset.
- Maintain punctuality and availability during scheduled work hours.
- Follow client instructions and maintain confidentiality of the Limited English‑speaking Person (LEP). Do not interact with the LEP without client permission.
- Understand protocol and terminology for industries including medical, insurance, finance, and law.
- Demonstrate commitment to cultural sensitivity and diversity.
- Fluency in Kanjobal and English and proficiency in cultural dynamics.
- Strong listening, retention, and note‑taking skills to maintain high accuracy.
- Ability to concentrate, remain detached and objective, and handle sensitive topics such as end‑of‑life conversations, pregnancy termination, vaccinations, and matters concerning sexual orientation and/or gender expression.
- High school diploma or equivalent. Education or work experience in language‑related fields (teaching, assessment, translation, or interpretation) preferred.
- At least 18 years of age and legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring future visa sponsorship.
- Ability to adapt to Language Line Technology enhancements.
- Ability to read and write in the requested languages is highly preferred.
- Dedicated personal device for business purposes (desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone).
- Operating system:
Windows, macOS, Chrome
OS, iPadOS, Android, or iOS. - No Kaspersky or Huawei hardware.
- High‑speed internet connection: download ≥5
Mbps, upload ≥3
Mbps, ping ≤300ms, jitter ≤30ms. - Access to a quiet space free from background noise or distraction.
- Operate a keyboard and mouse; remain in a stationary position for the majority of the workday.
- Operate company‑provided software and systems to perform all job aspects.
- Have sufficient manual dexterity to type or write.
- Lift up to 26lbs.
- May be exposed to moderate noise levels.
