Position OverviewThe Kham Telephone Interpreter is responsible for handling calls on demand and rendering the meaning of conversations between Kham and English speakers across a wide range of industries. The interpreter works remotely from a quiet, secure environment and maintains a professional demeanor at all times.
Essential Job Functions- Respond to interpreting sessions promptly and conduct interpretation in a friendly, professional manner.
- Render accurate concepts and meanings in accordance with established interpretation protocols, avoiding omissions or additions.
- Speak clearly in both languages using proper pronunciation, enunciation, and polite expressions.
- Maintain professionalism, remain calm during sessions—even when dealing with incoherent or upset speakers, especially in emergency situations such as 911 calls.
- Maintain punctuality and availability during scheduled work hours.
- Follow client instructions and comply with protocol to ensure client expectations are met with the Limited English‑speaking Person (LEP).
- Understand industry terminology and protocols for medical, insurance, finance, law, and other sectors.
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and work effectively in a diverse environment.
- Provide the required level of service under high call volume or emotionally stressful circumstances, including extended periods without breaks.
- Fluency in Kham and English with strong knowledge of associated cultural dynamics.
- Ability to provide cultural competency and address regional and accent differences.
- Excellent listening, retention, and note‑taking skills to maintain accuracy during interpretation.
- Capacity to stay detached, neutral, and objective during sensitive subjects such as end‑of‑life discussions, pregnancy termination, vaccinations, and topics concerning sexual orientation and gender expression.
- Preferred education or experience in language‑related fields (teaching, assessment, translation, or interpretation).
- Minimum age 18 and legal authorization to work in the United States without future visa sponsorship.
- High‑school diploma or equivalent.
- Strong reading and writing skills in the required languages (highly preferred).
- Dedicated personal device for business purposes: desktop or laptop computer (Windows, macOS, or Chrome
OS) or tablet (iPadOS or Android) or smartphone (iOS or Android) acceptable. - High‑speed internet connection: download ≥5
Mbps, upload ≥3
Mbps, ping ≤300ms, jitter ≤30ms. - Quiet, distraction‑free workspace with reliable power and stable network connectivity.
- Proficiency with company software and systems required for the role.
- Operate keyboard and mouse and remain in a stationary position in front of a computer for most of the day.
- Operate company‑provided software and systems to perform all aspects of the job.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to type or write.
- Ability to lift up to 26lbs.
- May be exposed to moderate noise levels from computer, audio, and telephone equipment.
