Status: Independent Contractor

Pay: $2.50 – $2.55 per minute

About the Role

Language Line Solutions is hiring a bilingual Hakka‑Taiwan‑English phone interpreter. The interpreter will handle phone calls on demand, serving clients across numerous industries including healthcare, government, insurance, finance, utilities, travel & hospitality, general business, law enforcement, court, and 911. The role is performed remotely from a private workspace.

Position Overview

The Hakka‑Taiwan telephone interpreter is responsible for handling calls on demand, rendering the meaning of conversations between Hakka‑Taiwan and English speakers. The interpreter processes information quickly, concisely and recognizes sensitive cultural differences. Professional and courteous at all times, the interpreter uses appropriate terminology and understands common industry procedures and practices.

Essential Job Functions
  • Respond promptly to interpreting sessions and conduct interpretation in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Render correct concepts and meanings according to established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.
  • Speak clearly in both languages with proper pronunciation, enunciation and polite expressions.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor throughout sessions.
  • Remain calm during sessions even if a primary speaker is incoherent, upset or in emergency situations such as 911 calls.
  • Maintain punctuality and availability during work hours.
  • Follow client instructions in compliance with protocol, ensuring client expectations are met with the Limited‑English‑Speaking Person (LEP) and avoid unauthorized interaction.
  • Understand terminology for various industries, including but not limited to medical, insurance, finance and law.
  • Demonstrate commitment to cultural sensitivity and working in a diverse environment.
  • Remain on a call for extended periods when necessary, providing service within the company’s dynamic environment.
Qualifications
  • Fluency in Hakka‑Taiwan and English, with strong cultural competency, including regional and accent variations.
  • Excellent listening, retention, and note‑taking skills to maintain high accuracy during interpretation.
  • Ability to concentrate, remain detached and neutral, and handle sensitive subjects such as end‑of‑life conversations, pregnancy termination, vaccinations, and matters concerning sexual orientation and gender expression.
  • Education or experience in language‑related fields such as teaching, language assessment, translation or interpretation preferred.
  • Minimum 18 years of age and legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Ability to read/write both languages highly preferred.
  • Must adapt to technology enhancements that improve service delivery.
  • Must have access to a quiet, secure working environment and possess a dedicated device for work.
Technical Requirements
  • Dedicated personal computer or tablet (Windows, macOS, Chrome

    OS, iPadOS, Android) acceptable. Smartphone acceptable.
  • Internet connection: ≥5

    Mbps download, ≥3

    Mbps upload, ping ≤300ms, jitter ≤30ms.
  • Access to quiet space free from background noise or distractions.
  • Ability to operate a keyboard and mouse, type or write, and lift up to 26lbs.
Physical Requirements

Must operate a keyboard and mouse, remain stationary before a computer for the majority of the workday, have sufficient manual dexterity, and be able to lift up to 26lbs. Exposure to moderate noise levels is possible.
