Language Line Solutions is hiring a Gulay-English Phone Interpreter to provide real-time interpretation services remotely from your home. This role is an independent contractor position and is not eligible for employee benefits. The interpreter will work with a range of clients across industries such as healthcare, government, insurance, finance, utilities, travel & hospitality, general business, law enforcement, court, and 911. Pay is $0.75–$0.90 per minute.
Position OverviewAs a Gulay telephone interpreter, you will handle on-demand calls, translating conversations between Gulay and English speakers while maintaining professionalism, cultural sensitivity, and accurate terminology. You will conduct your work in a quiet, secure home-office environment.
Essential Job Functions- Respond promptly to interpretation sessions and conduct them in a friendly, professional manner.
- Render concepts and meanings correctly in accordance with established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.
- Speak clearly in both languages with proper pronunciation, enunciation, and polite expressions.
- Maintain a professional demeanor throughout all sessions, remaining calm even when speakers are incoherent, upset, or during emergencies such as 911 calls.
- Maintain punctuality and availability during scheduled work hours.
- Follow client instructions and protocol to meet expectations, ensuring no interaction with the limited English‑speaking person (LEP) without client permission.
- Understand industry‑specific terminology and procedures for medical, insurance, finance, law, and other sectors.
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and work effectively in a diverse environment.
- Handle calls that may be highly emotional or stressful, staying on call for extended periods if required.
- Fluent in Gulay and English with strong cultural competency and ability to assess regional accent differences.
- Excellent listening, retention, and note‑taking skills for high accuracy.
- Strong concentration, emotional detachment, neutrality, and objectivity, especially on sensitive subjects such as end‑of‑life conversations, pregnancy termination, vaccinations, and matters concerning sexual orientation or gender expression.
- Preferred education or experience in teaching, language assessment, translation, or interpretation.
- Ability to adapt to technology enhancements that improve service delivery.
- Minimum 18years of age, legally authorized to work in the United States, no need for future visa sponsorship, and high‑school diploma or equivalent.
- Reading and writing proficiency in both languages highly preferred.
- Dedicated personal device (desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone) for business purposes.
- Operating system:
Windows, macOS, or Chrome
OS for desktop/laptop; iPadOS or Android for tablets; iOS or Android for smartphones. - Restricted brands:
Kaspersky products, Huawei hardware. - High‑speed internet connection with download ≥5
Mbps, upload ≥3
Mbps, ping ≤300ms, jitter ≤30ms. - Quiet, distraction‑free workspace.
- Operate a keyboard and mouse and remain stationary in front of a computer for the majority of the workday.
- Use company software and systems to perform all job functions.
- Manual dexterity sufficient for typing or writing.
- Lift up to 26lbs.
- Ability to tolerate moderate noise levels (computer, audio, telephone).
