SummaryThe Unconventional (TU) is seeking a qualified Transcriber to support the Department of Justice (DOJ) with Translation, Interpretation, Transcription, and other Linguistic Support Services (LSS). Activities may include the translation of written, electronic, video, and audio materials and ancillary services such as court and deposition interpretation. Source material will contain legal, business, public administrative, medical, scientific, financial, historical, geographical, and military terminology, including technology used in the sciences.
Job DescriptionThe materials to be translated, transcribed, or interpreted are legal in nature and may be provided in electronic or hard copy formats, including books, journal articles, reports, manuscripts, letters, legal documents, memoranda, multimedia presentations, spreadsheets, email correspondence, SMS, MMS, audio, and video files. The substance of the materials may range from highly complex technical information to very informal street language and textspeak, covering subjects such as medical reports, chemical laboratory reports, bank statements, cryptocurrency transaction tracking, wire transfers, charging documents, warrants, treaties, statutes, regulations, court decisions, executive decisions, extradition requests, and mutual legal assistance requests.
All material is considered sensitive, requiring strict confidentiality measures.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in language transcription.
- Qualifying scores ILR 3 minimum or equivalent in listening, comprehension, and writing on language/translation tests.
- Must have lived 3 of the last 5 years in the U.S. (does not have to be consecutive).
- Must have at least 1 year of experience working with a law enforcement and/or legal department.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Knowledge of both English and the foreign language vocabularies used in formal, legal, diplomatic, consultative, and casual modes, including colloquial slang and regionalisms.
- Knowledge of specialized vocabulary in both English and the foreign language related to government activities.
- Ability to write fluently in both languages, preserving tone, register, and meaning.
- Translation must be factually and conceptually accurate, without changes, omissions, or additions.
- Preservation of the tone and register of source language materials.
- Adherence to the relevant code of linguist ethics.
- Proficiency in Computer‑Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, especially SDL Trados Studio.
- Active Public Trust or higher security clearance.
- Remote work possible; some travel may be required.
