Spanish Translation Consultant
The Spanish Translation Consultant provides professional translation services in support of the Pioneer, OCCC's award-winning student newspaper, with a 50-year history of publication. Reporting to the Pioneer Faculty Advisor, this remote contract position collaborates with student journalists to review, refine, and produce accurate, publication-quality Spanish translations of news and feature content. The consultant serves as both a translator and mentor, providing guidance and feedback that helps students strengthen their written Spanish language and translation skills while ensuring high editorial standards for bilingual publication.

Translate news articles, feature stories, editorials, and other written content from English to Spanish while preserving the original meaning, tone, style, and journalistic integrity. Review, edit, and refine student-generated Spanish translations to ensure accuracy, clarity, consistency, grammar, and cultural appropriateness prior to publication. Collaborate with the Pioneer Faculty Advisor and student journalists to clarify content, terminology, and context to produce high-quality bilingual publications.
Provide constructive feedback and mentoring to student journalists to strengthen their Spanish writing, editing, and translation skills. Ensure translated content adheres to established editorial standards, publication deadlines, and style guidelines. Proofread translated materials for grammar, spelling, punctuation, formatting, and consistency before publication. Research terminology and subject matter as needed to ensure accurate and contextually appropriate translations. Recommend revisions that improve readability while maintaining the intent and voice of the original author.
Maintain consistency in terminology and style across all translated publications. Communicate professionally and promptly with the Faculty Advisor regarding project status, questions, and deadlines. Maintain confidentiality of unpublished materials, student work, and other sensitive information. Complete assigned translation projects within established timelines while maintaining a high level of quality and accuracy. Participate in virtual meetings with the Faculty Advisor and student editorial staff as requested.
Perform other translation-related services within the scope of the contract as assigned.
Abide by the policies and procedures published in the Board of Regents Policies and College Policies & Procedures. Contribute to a safe educational & working environment. Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices for the purpose of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others. Complete quarterly health and safety training pursuant to OCCC's established safety and health procedures and practices.
Participate in all applicable OCCC emergency, evacuation and shelter in place drills and be prepared to take action and assist others in taking appropriate action should a health or safety emergency occur.
